Challenge: Empty Room (Advanced Editing IV)
Camera: Nikon D50
Lens: Nikon AF-S DX Zoom-Nikkor 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 ED
Location: South Mountain State Park - Phoenix ,AZ
Date: Jun 1, 2006
Aperture: f 6.3

Shutter: 1/160 sec

Date Uploaded: Jun 1, 2006

As I walked into this \"Room\" atop South Mountain Park outside Phoenix, I was struck by the view of the valley below. The \"window\" became the thing in the room that I photographed.
Asjustments to contrast and brightness in the RAW file then adjustments to highlights and shadows in PS Elements 4. Cloned out the top of a plastic water bottle in the bottom left hand corner (left by a previous visitor).

Ahhhhh. . . this is like the photo I commented on today thinking it was a framing challenge outtake. It really is a beautiful photo, but I guess the dnmc police got you for not having a clear empty room with an object in it they could see and touch. I really love it!

In the framing challenge, I bet it would have scored muuuuuuuuch better!

Hey there from the Critique Club

Camera Work/Technical: Very, very nice. Looking through your past challenges, I think that this is one of your nicest images. Your focus is spot on and your depth of field works very well to show the distance of the capture. Make sure that you always try to use the full size parameters that DPC offers. Voters like larger images.

Lighting: You did a really nice job with harsh lighting conditions. The distant sky is nicely exposed and you still maintained details in the walls of the foreground,

Composition/Content: The walls, and the detail capture withing, serve the image very well to pull the viewer into the distant horizon. I also think that the centered composition works very well for framing the distant mountains and horizon.

My Opinion: You have one of your best images to date here, but it missed the challenge. Voters will hammer you if they feel that you didn't meet the challenge. Even with that, there is no way that this is a sub-5 scoring image. I think that it would make a fine wall hanger.

A nice shot but think it would've worked better for the Framing II challenge.

Too bad this picture was not entered for the Framing contest instead! Because the picture is really nice, and fits that challenge perfectly. Here, I fail to find a thing in the room, although I understand the "thing" is the view itself.

I can't see anything that you brought into this room. It looks like it was taken in a tower of a castle, what is the location?

What did you bring into this room with your camera? Take one thing and your camera into an empty room and photograph it.

I do not feel the emptiness of the room because such a small part of it is shown.
06/06/2006 07:50:46 PM
I'm not sure what one thing you brought into the room.
06/06/2006 02:10:11 PM
Nicely done, this just needs a bit quicker shutter speed to avoid the extreme brightness from the sky.
