I agree with what has been stated by the others but let me add one thing.
The calvery officer should be in sharp focus and stand out from the background. What would help is to use your maximum zoom and put more space between the officer and the army. Could be the digital noise makes the image look out of focus.

If this was shot on a lower ISO the bokeh would be much better in my opinion. The graniness takes away from the smooth look that makes bokeh appealing. You could also try some noise reduction on it. The background would also have been blurred out more if you put the back figures further back and then shot from a lower angle (to still get them in the frame). As it stands their is too much definition in the background. |

I never got around to voting all the entries in the Bokeh challenge - my bad. So I'm afraid I never got to see yours.
What could have been improved perhaps was the lighting. If you'd had a bit more light on those background characters, the bokeh on them would have been enhanced, and a silhouette effect on the front character might have made it jump out a bit more.
And as rblanton mentioned, a lower angle also might have served to strengthen the main subject.
As for the graininess, I see that your ISO was set to auto. In low light, the camera would have chosen the highest ISO it has, and that would make the shot very grainy. Next time select the lowest ISO manually, and use a longer shutter speed.
Still, nice idea. I also used to love playing Risk... |

Hi Mary,
Here is the promised critique, but I am no pro so take it with a grain of salt. I liked the contribution of the bokeh to what this shot is about, the formation of the army and canon behind does exactly what the challenge asked. Three things did not work for me, the graininess, the color and the angle of the shot. A lower angle would have worked better for me as well as some contrast/color variation. I scored it a 5 and think the setup was well thought out and the bokeh contributed towards your shot. Hope this is beneficial, writing this reminds me of all my flawed photos and I cringe as I write.
