This is Grackie, the common Grackle. He was released to the wild a week ago, but continues to hang around and beg me for food.

The image was converted to black and white in camera and editing consisted of levels adjustment.

Just wanted to add... The photo wasn't supposed to represent a specific superstition, but encompass many superstitions that surround crows/ravens/blackbirds. Most of those superstitions include the bird being a messanger, bringer of bad tidings, etc. So I liked the title for that reason (not to mention Poe is awesome)... Didnt have much choice about the background, Grackie goes where he pleases and this was the best out of about 50 photos. The color version was not good at all, there was a lot of greenish dying grass that just caught your eye before anything else.

Also, the tail is cropped out because its reallllllly long and the composition did not look right when it was included.

I like this. B/W was a good choice. I would like to see the raven a little blacker, though. Not sure how to accomplish that, however. Maybe more contrast? Bump the blacks in selective color? I don't know. He's staring right at me!

edit: I done left a word out!

"Quoth the Raven, Nevermore" This is a line from one of my favorite holloween poems. Yet, without the title I would have never thought this photo had anything to do with Superstitions & Urban Legends. Why are the tail feathers cropped out? Nice use of B&W. Good luck.

Nice close-up shot. Pretty good clarity on the bird. Contrast is fine. Range seems a bit narrow.

This is gorgeous. The raven has a very intelligent, all-knowing look on his face, and the background is perfect to set the mood. Great capture.

Nice literary title. IMO however this is lacking a little in contrast. The raven is a bit lost against the background. I'd be interested to see the colour version to see if the black stood out more.

I wish there was a bit more contrast between the Raven and the background.

You think we read literature? I'm not sure I dig the background. The raven is well captured though although perhaps a tiny bit oversharp.

needs to be 'darker'.

Nice pic, very sharp, only reason I didn't score higher is I'm a high contrast kinda guy ;-) Good job!

I know of the edgar allen poe poem but I dont know of any related superstition nor urban legend that has to do with it. ill trust ya though. it seems a little too bright in the lower left hand corner but I like the tones in the rest of the photo. nice focus too.

Simple, yet effective, I love B&W and it goes well with this picture

Very nice image, but the 'Raven' was "Perched upon a bust of Pallas", and not sure what Urban Legend or Superstition this would even be. It is of a poem you see. But nontheless a nice image indeed.

I like and don't like how it blends in.
