Challenge: Motion Blur II (Advanced Editing IV*)
Camera: Canon EOS-5D
Lens: Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L USM
Location: Cedar City, Utah
Date: Jun 24, 2006
Aperture: f/8
ISO: 50
Shutter: 1/160
Date Uploaded: Jun 24, 2006

Shot ISO 50 in order to be able to blur the motion at f/8.

Editing was fairly simple:

1) Converted from raw

2) Added contrast/color by using a second layer in soft light mode (I think at only about 30-50% opacity)

3) Reduce size

4) Sharpened

5) Added border

6) Save for web

Nice clarity on the bike, though the light is a bit harsh.

Nice use of directional blur in the background, and just a smidgeon of rotational blur in the spokes. Plenty of space to the right for the rider to "ride into" as well, creating a sense of forward direction.

I'd have been inclined to clone out some of the stuff happening with the sky (if that's within the rules, I haven't checked).

Nice panning job.

When I was a freshman in college, we were kidding a bike-riding buddy about how he was "over the hill," because he was turning an ancient (to us) 25 years old.

"Yeah, but one thing about being over the hill," he replied, "you get to coast all the way down."

I once coasted for 13-1/2 miles down State Highway 9 from Highway 35 (Skyline Boulevard) to the town of Felton, near Santa Cruz, California. That was fun : )

I like the crop in this one, and the excellent motion capture. He is really sharp which makes it so fitting to the challenge.

It certainly is! At least I enjoy it when on my bike.

Nice focus. Harsh midday light, by the looks of it. But you did well to control all the aspects of light and speed in the photo.
