The monarch butterfly has had great difficulty in maintaining migration here in the northeast. Many of the host plants the monarch survives on have been destroyed due to development. Milkweed is one of those host plants that has been regularly destroyed as subdivisions continue to sprawl across the region.
Due to town efforts to maintain stands of milkweed, as well as a nursery in Massachusetts that breeds monarchs, amongst many other endangered butterflies, the monarch is returning in large numbers once again.
Progress in envirnomental issues has helped to gain back some of the balance that unchecked development destroyed. As more towns create land use documents, and also try to control development on a wider scale, we will see more success stories such as the monarch.
In Connecticut we have brought back wild turkeys, the fisher, black bears, moose, and some other species. Much more needs to be done, and we must always be aware of what we are doing when the bulldozers decide to come through for new housing and businesses. |

Very nice butterfly picture! Like the diagonals formed by the placement of the butterfly in the frame, and the ants are kinda cool. Somewhat title-dependent tie-in to the challenge, though the butterfly signifies the end of the progression from the caterpillar stage. |

Beautiful photo and gorgeous butterfly but without the title I couldn't see how this relates to the challenge. |

A little macro-critique in case it is helpful.
I like the format and the composition, the position of the butterfly is good and so is the inclusion of a portion of the flower-head on which the butterfly is feeding.
However, the butterfly isn't in focus, it looks like the point of focus is on the front of the flower.
The trailing edge of the forewing is too close to the edge of the frame and the tip of one of the antennae has been chopped off.
The lighting on the butterfly and the flower is soft and subtle which works nicely but the light on the background is too harsh and bright which is a problem. Sometimes it is possible to hold up a diffuser sheet to control the light on the background.
Rotating the camera to take a vertical might have allowed you to eliminate that bright flower on the bottom left whicle still retaining the overall feel of the picture. |
