My first challenge...
I had a lot of great ideas for this challenge, but my weekend was shot when my AC went out (95 degrees outside). On top of that, my laptop stopped working!!!! So, I just snapped this in a hurry to have something to submit. I also didn't realize this shot was so grainy and soft until I opened it on the computer and by then my "model" was fast asleep. Oh well! I'm still learning my way around the Rebel XT and would also like to improve my photography in general. I think this website will push me toward those goals.

I updated to change the title... The original title was based on a quote from my daughter, but came from a completely different situation. What she said: "I'm a big girl now! I can get a car!" But she really said that after she "used the potty like a big girl". I changed it thinking it might not be as funny without knowing the whole story about how she's been wanting a car for several months now. I'm not talking about a toy car... she wants a car like momma drives (except she wants a blue one). They really do grow up too fast!

I really liked JulieG's photo. When I saw it during voting, I was surprised (and disappointed) that someone had the same idea. I was the first to comment on her photo (being my first challenge, I was eager to see the competition). I gave it a 10. I guess I liked it so much because it was the same idea... and I thought she nailed it.

Thank you! My goal was to be in the top 25% (or score over 5.5) and I just made it. I'm pleased with it and will have to work hard to get a better score next time!

Boy, this meets the challenge perfectly! For my taste, a bit less grain would be awesome, but maybe you intended to have the graininess. I really like the tones and the fact that the little girl is looking right into the camera. The angle of the hand and the way you cropped it at an angle adds a nice dynamic to the image.

Would like this slightly darker overall.

Somethings just remind me of being a kid, and that feeling of freedom we never knew we had. This is one of them. Very nice! I am seeing quite a bit of noise though.

There's something I don't like about children's pictures. This is one of them. I feel like the child is being exploited. Don't get me wrong tho. Someone else did the same concept, but with a comical twist and I gave them top score.

Let me contradict myself now. Without the arm/pencil, it's a stunning picture of your child. I'm drawn to her eyes, but then there's this distracting hand in the way (which you need to meet the challenge). Maybe if she wasn't looking at me, but looking at the pencil instead?

I did give this picture a 4, but on review, I'll give it something higher like a 6. (I normally score 5s and 6s with only one 10 in the whole challenge).

Almost forgot to mention, I like the B&W converstion too.
Good luck.

Made me smile. A very nice interpretation of "progress"; works well in monochrome.

How can you not give a growing child a '10'?
