I was out trying to photograph a bee when I found this small spider right under my nose. For those arachnophobics out there (which includes myself), it's actually very small - only about 0.75" across.

I took about 30 shots of the spider at lots of angles and got by far the best results on manual focus at minimum focal length.

As post-processing I used USM (first) then upped the contrast and brightness a little.

Hopefully this won't get slated for not being an insect.. A DPC thread /did/ say spiders were ok by common definition, honest!

Great lighting here; it highlights the spider very well and shows off her web.

The building in the background is disturbingly tilted. The photo would be better without the building. Looks like it was taken hand-held.

Nice capture on this one. The detail in the spider and the web is great.

This is very nice - the thing that brought the points down for me are the circles of light/yellow otherwise terrific

This is one of the better ones of the spidershots. Your background is sufficiently blurry (if not very exciting) and the sunlight hitting the threads of the web highlight them well. Plus, your spider is actually in focus and on the right side of the web. Like it :) The biggest distraction is the blown out sky, I think you could significantly improve the photo by cropping as much as possible of the top.

Btw, since there's the hot discussion going on, I feel spiders are within the challenge guidelines and any score I give is purely based on the photo quality. Just thought I should add that. :)

Very nice backlit spider - got the exposure just right on it. Well done.

Great shot. Unfortunately the background is a little distracting. Best of luck.

Neat shot. I find webs very hard to shoot. I have heard of many ideas about spraying them with water, or even hairspray. Pretty spider. I think it is like mine here: //www.justineo.com/htm/a025.htm

This is a great looking spider. The bright spot in the background is a little distracting.

The spider is nice, but the white glare at the top is a little distracting for me, I would have maybe cropped that some.

Let me be one of the first to comment ... it isn't an insect. Nice DOF though.
