Saw this weird machine on the front of a black steam train engine for years near Seattle. Thought it might make a cool "non-subject". After I captured the image, I found out that it is was a snowplow used to clear railroad tracks. Bit of a letdown, as I thought that it was the Millenium Falcon! And yes...the red spot in the middle is really there.

In my eye, the metal was dark and mysterious, but the image needed some work to get there because it looked really flat after I shot it.

- shot in RAW
- cropped
- levels & curves
- saturation/selective colors
- dodged/burned
- cloned out some small reflections
- resized w/ border
- sharpening for web
- small amount of smoothing
- save for web

Not sure if anyone else will like this image, but as for all the challenges, I had a fun time shooting it.

Hello from the Critique Club:

I think the comments you received during the challenge sum up your entry pretty well, “Cool, Sci-Fiâ€, “Lighting is greatâ€, “Detail captured is excellentâ€. I must confess that I’ve never seen an image of a black object with so much detail and dramatic looking to boot. Having 20/20 hindsight commenting after the challenge, your image could just as easily have been in the top ten as any of the others. Thus, with no technical flaws and by meeting the challenge no questions asked, your score merely reflects the tastes of the voters and in particular, the small number that happened to vote on your image. You have a stunning entry here that anyone at DPC would be proud to have in their portfolio.

Whatever it is, I could have gone without the red dot. Is it a toy?

I don't know what it is, but it does look menacing, and the detail captured without having the shadows block up is excellent.
