Took this as a wall of fog rolled in over the harbor. My lense was covered with mist after just a few seconds, so this turned out much better than I had hoped.

- NI
- levels/curves
- slight bump of master sat
- selective color blacks, +black
- USM
- cloned out the major water spots that had dotted my lense
- gaussian blurred the fog to get rid of the water spots i couldnt get rid of by cloning
- couple of swiped of dodge on the boat to get the white to jump out a bit more
- resize, border, submit. no cropping, im trying to force myself to compose it right in the first place

post challenge: What was the point of this shot? To capture the feeling of isolation that the scene presented to me. It was very haunting. I saw another such solitary-boat shot in the challenge, so I guess it wasn't that original but I liked it a lot.

This does create an isolated feel, but a calming one, not a disturbing one. I like how the horizon nearly blends with the sky but not quite. Really a very nice shot!

The technicals: well done. focus and lighting are naturally well done (6+ shots always are). Composition is nice. I think it's more traditional to have the negative space on the left. Does that improve the shot? I don't really know, but I find myself respond to pictures better when composed that way and do it myself now when the two choices seem the same.

The feel: Does certainly feel isolated. These shots are certainly aren't original (I was even trying to shoot one on the ferry ride I took yesterday), but that doesn't mean they aren't good.

The game: It's pretty hard to say what can improve a 6+ shot. That's a really good score. Taking the minimalism even further may have done it. How? By having even less or no detail in the sky. Also a B&W treatment may have inched the score higher too. Check out this similar shot in the Image Grain challenge. It scored a 6.5:

I like the overall blue cast and how the horizon just fades off to nowhere. Nicely captured.

the lone boat adrift in a vast body of water is always a popular shot...the tones definetely set a very specific mood here, and it works quite well

Beautiful the way that the sky merges with the water. I would prefer no framing as it seems to detract from the uniformity of color.

Good sense of space and somewhat "loneliness".
