This demonstration on combustion reactions was performed during one of my science classes. This is how I did it:

1. Safety attire first: goggles, apron, long sleeves rolled back, and students with long hair had to tie it back.
2. Rubber tubing was attached to a gas jet at the lab table.
3. Methane gas was allowed to bubble through a solution of soap detergent, water, and a little glycerin contained in a beaker.
4. The bubbles of methane rose up out of the beaker (methane is lighter than air) and were scooped by hand.
5. A burning splint was used to ignite the bubbles.

I was unable to do much staging of this (other than making sure the periodic table was in the background) because I was more concerned with safety issues. The only lighting I had was the fluorescent lights in the room and the flash on my camera.

Post-processing in PS: adjustments in curves, saturation and contrast, crop, save for web, sharpen.

Interesting picture - a little grainy in areas, and the focus is a bit soft.

He needs a while look in his eye, but its a great flame. Needs something to make him pow as much as the flam does. Nice capture.

ACTION!
this must be nice to do
rather nasty reflection (flash?) on the periodic table in BG and flame a bit overexposed. but I quess, this is hard to get a good exposure of because of large dynamic range.
best of luck

Tough to argue that THIS meets the challenge :) ... This is pretty crazy and looks like a genuine scene from the classroom. This guy seems strangely calm!!! The only thing i might mess with is the white balance since there's a tint of yellow green in the background.
