This underwater shot was taken in a flooded quarry. I do not know the correct English words for it, but it was a kind of granit mine in the past. Scuba diving in this water is very interesting, because you can dive through a kind of underwater forest there. The trees, which are relicts from the time before the quarry was filled with water (rain and groundwater), are looking very spooky. You should try that sometime... ;-)

Model: My lovely Susi
Depth: approx. 15m
Equip.: Olympus C-5050 in underwater case, external strobe and 16mm wide angel conversion lens

PP: cropped, removed some distracting elements, curves, hue/sat, selective color, burning and dodging, resize, NI, USM, border

Greetings from the Critique Club Matthes!

Composition:

I am really impressed with how well composed this image is considering you were underwater! I like the trees leading from the left of the image and the position of Susi between them is very good.

Technicals:

Great lighting but a little lighter near the bottom may have helped and I would like to have seen a little bit more detail in the trees but not sure how easy that would have been to do! There does appear to be a little noise on the divers wet suit which I think one of your commenters pointed out.

My personal thought:

Overall I think this is an excellent underwater image and for a free study you scored pretty good :o)Anythings that could be suggested to change may not have been very easy for you to do due to the location!

If you've got any questions about this critique, please feel free to contact me via the PM system.

I missed this one in voting. I think it's great. I can see why you had a hard time choosing between this and your other one, but I think you made the right choice - the diver just hanging there in suspension makes it a little more special. ;>þ

7 - Good, except for the grain in the darker areas (could be jpeg/resizing issues, not sure), especially on the wetsuit. Nice colors and composition. Like to see more clarity on the air bubbles, but that's likely another image.

I like the blues and greens. The lighting really creates a quiet, but haunting mood. Nice work.

I like the glowing green and the contorted claw shape that is trapping him. 7

Very cool green tones in this, they stand out so brilliantly against those rich blues. Excellent photo!

Wow, underwater photography. We certainly don't get to see too much of this around here. I'm not even sure how to judge this! Underwater gets an entirely different set of rules...

Plentiful algae there. Might be in a freshwater location? Nice to see some subaqua photography on DPC. 8.
