As I drove home from my sister's hockey game, this train crossed my path. I had another shot ready to go for this challenge, but I wasn't happy with it. A coworker called it a Burlington Northern Santa Fe "Promotional Photograph." Which is exactly what it was.

This shot, however, I consider much more artsy. That of course means it will fail miserably, but that's ok, I like this shot and that's all I really care about.

Post Challenge:

Haha, I knew this would tank. I wanted to get that 4 out of the way, but that's not to say that I don't really like this shot. Such is life on DPC

I am really bummed that this shot did not do better! It was one of my favorites in the challenge...I gave it a 10. I actually rated this challenge and picked favorites based on the shots I knew my son would like. He is an Autistic 6 year old who is OBSESSED with railroad crossings, not so much trains, but the railroad crossings!! You had every element he would love...the moving train, the lights flashing and the bars down. I just got the chance to show him the favorites I elected for him to see (I had to sort out the shots that appeared threatening and the derailment would have freaked him out), and this was surely his favorite. He wants me to take him out right now to recreate this shot! It is 3 in the afternoon, and I am trying to explain why we can't do this RIGHT NOW. Anyway...thought you should know...you created an image that was greatly enjoyed by me and my son. As far as I am concerned, he is the world's greatest critic and knows a good photo when he sees one!!!!

I never understand the mentality that good artsy shots dont do well, i love this shot personally. I like the effect that the prominence of the white stripes and the glow from the lights has on the genreal darkness of the image also the grainyness (is that a word) i feel adds to it. and the finishing touch is the avoid on comming bullets sign on the post (i know what it is really but it will forever be on comming bullets :P) great shot though.

if you couldn't see the hood, then the standalone quality of the b/w "artistic" shot would greatly increase.

A simple crossing but real interesting edit w/ emphasis on shape & high contrast. a fav - 8 in the challenge. I think very good work.

I like the treatment of the black and white including the grain. The motion is great. I feel you could have cropped out the hood of your car though.

A pretty shot. The movement is nicely captured, and I can identify with the story - waiting at a crossing. I wish more of the car got into the foreground - otherwise it looks accidental. 8

Gritty exciting composition, a dynamic jumble of shapes, a mix of fine detail/highlights with bold simple shapes. 9

But you're supposed to get out of the car! Neat perspective to capture, though, since it's the way we all see trains at crossings. B&W works well for this.

Hey, this photo is dark and grainy! But you already knew that.... An interesting shot, and I'm not sure what would improve it. From my perspective, the engine, or car to the left looks "pixelated". If there was a way to get more clarity of the train, without losing the motion blur I would have bumped it up. Good job.

could have done with some cropping at the bottom

At first glance I was distracted by the dashboard of the car, but I realized this is how we actually view most trains...thru our car's windshields! I love the gritty feel of your image.
