love the colour of the fish, i think siamese fighting fish like quite warm slightly brackish water?

Maybe your fish don't last so long because they have to live with those colours. ;-)
Yes, certainly not having more detail in his eye makes him look unwell. |

I like this shot, I wish there were a touch more detail in his eye, however then I'd bet the background foreground would be blown to bits. Nice focus point though.
