To me, this is a complete portrait - the bird AND it's environment. The detail and color in the surroundings are excellent. Of course that does mean that your bird doesn't take center stage (and I'm pretty sure the bird prefers it that way so his prey doesn't pay great attention to him) and that can dissuade some voters. Still a pretty good score and no 1s, 2s, or 3s! |

I take a lot of shots of Great Blue Herons, so I know a good one when I see it. This is a good one, but not a great one. I think that's what hurt the score -- too many other GBH shots out there to compare it with.
What I do really admire about this is the background. That is hard to get -- the colors, clarity, and depth. So often the background is blurred out to prevent it from competing with the subject. Here the subject almost competes with the background. I really like that swamp. |
