In search of diagonals I went to an old barn that I figured would have digonal cross braces. When I saw this composition I thought of The Flag of Scotland (St. Andrew's Cross) known as the Saltire. The word saltire dates from the 14th century with ties to heraldry and equestrianism.

The lighting was harsh and this was the first photo I took. I thought the picture was terrible when I took it because the back light was so harsh and the viewfinder was blinking blown highlights like crazy. I then tried every angle I could physically get to, but no luck. I was dissapointed that I missed the shot, but when I pulled it up on the computer I was pleasently supprized. The blown highlights kinda emphasize the "flag" composition I was going for with the St. Andrew's Cross.

Shot RAW, converted with Adobe, default settings (auto white balance when shot). I resized first to 640 and then applied a curves adjustment layer with a very slight s curve to darken the highlights and pull out the shadows. I sharpened with USM with 100/1.0 twice, but the second pass killed the tone of the image. I undid that and stuck with the softer version. Added a black border and saved for web.

Kinda dark - makes me search for the texture & interest. A little PP playing (what's legal for this challenge anyway - contrast, color, sharpening, etc.) would have gotten you more mileage, I think. 'Diagonal' connection is strong, but not compelling enough on its own without help from what it is composed of, IMHO. I'm pretty much a newbie here, though, so take my comments with a grain of salt - just 'cause I'm being critical doesn't mean I think MY stuff is doing any better! You'll likely lap my submission... Good luck!

seems out of focus or too softened
