There actually was a vase under the flower. I used a piece of red construction paper and desturated it a little bit to appear more soft and pleasing. Neat Imaged a bit to remove the grain of the construction paper. 500W shop light for the lighting. Set my tripod with the center column on the horizontal setting.

I was going for something like this:

Good idea, but the shadow needs to be crisper

I really like this - how refreshing to see the flower head on and the shadow providing the context of vase etc. A great composition and the pink background works beautifully.

8. Lovely daisy. Good choice for background color.

Nice light on the flower. It's almost glowing and you didn't blow any of it out. Very well shot. The shadow is a bit too long, maybe if the stem had been cut a little. The composition is too balanced which tends to make it not so exciting.

Very good work.

I'm not crazy about the background color.
The shadow seems to be somewhat blury, did you use studio lights instead of sunlight?
The white border I think could have been thinner.

I did several of these shots and the only ones I liked were the ones I shot in bright sunlight, the shadows were 100% better.

This is still a high vote for me.
