My good friend Bill. He was such a good sport to pose for me. Once I knew the topic I knew what I wanted to submit, I just had no idea who to sit in the chair. Once Bill popped into my head it was game over...no one else would do :)

Not sure how well it will score, but it's one of my all-time favourites.

post challenge* dork that I am I didn't notice it was advanced editing. oops :) I'd have dodged his eyes a little to liven him up some if I had known...actually I did for the print I'm giving him.

tanks, y'all

How funny that you pulled off a photo like this without even the advantage of enhancing the eyes and "stuff". You're awesome! And so is this photo! It doesn't need advanced editing. It's perfect!

A quality portrait. I think that the raised hand looks pretentious, like something artificial to make the photograph "special". 6

Fun, inviting image here. Sharp and well detailed with an impression of high contrast with that shirt. Hurts my eyes! :D Overall, nicely done. Good luck in the challenge.

the shirt is competiting with the main subject here. i think, strong features/character of man's face would have had more impact otherwise. i like the shot none the less. 9

This is great. The lines and patterns of his shirt is a great compliment to the lines and textures of his skin. Lighting is great. This just has a really nice gritty feel to it. Bumping up to 9 and adding to my faves.

Age should not have its face lifted, but it should rather teach the world to admire wrinkles as the etchings of experience and the firm line of character.

Completely in love with this portrait.. that an 81 year young, man would pose in this way is testament to his playful spirit... and his shirt.. Perfect!! This is Art.

whats with his hand on his face like that, i do not get it

01/12/2007 07:39:26 AM
Excellent work, this must be a special person to pose with the hand like that, many of his generation are rather conservative when it comes to photography.

"Now Read the Next Line." Sorry couldn't resist. This is one of the best that I've seen so far. Definetly a top 10 and probably a ribbon- if not you got robbed.

stripes on shirt too distracting otherwise well done.

I love this. The hand over the eye makes it jump out, the contrast is great and the whites aren't so white that they're blown out.

01/10/2007 06:36:42 PM
Compelling ... can't help but think about what this would look like with a closer crop, same pose/expression but less shirt (it really takes over the wonderful skin tones and contrast).

01/10/2007 12:33:29 PM
Without the hand on his face would have been a 10 in my own humble opinion.... still a great shot though!

01/10/2007 11:16:06 AM
This is really wonderful. Reminiscent of Richard Avedon's work. I like how his hand is pushing his nose over. I even like the geometry of his shirt. Great contrast, focus, light and shadow.

nice portrait, good lighting and character. The hand is adding a nice touch of originality. The pattern of the shirt is a bit distracting though. I would prefer the picture with a more neutral color and a closer crop. Good job still.
