Challenge: Sacred Places (Classic Editing)
Camera: Sony DSC-F717
Location: Sedona, Arizona USA
Date: Nov 9, 2003
Aperture: f/5.6
ISO: 100
Shutter: 1/1000th
Galleries: Landscape, Architecture
Date Uploaded: Nov 9, 2003

This is the Chapel of the Holy Cross in Northern Arizona in the USA. It is high on the side of a red walled canyon and built into a cleft of rock. The Chapel is cement slab constructed and rather small.

This shot was underexposed 1 f/stop to better capture original colors. Then it was color adjusted and brightened to regenerate the true bright colors. Neat Image was used to reduce noise.

Unfortunately Neat Image produced a .jpg file larger that 150Kb so it had to be downsized a second time in PS7. That explains the general poor quality of the image.

I can see why this had to be validated, LOL! That building certainly looks like it was placed in there by Photo shop, very nice clarity.

The angle of the shot threw me off at first and while the clarity and sharpness is there, it's almost too sharp, you know, too perfect and for me that's a bit of a minus. A different angle might have helped, more from the front of the structure possibly. I started at a 6, am going to an 8

This is a very cool scene! Where is this? Western USA??? If it is, it's going towards the top of places I need to see! The focus is a touch off but you get bonus for being lucky enough to be near a place like this! I gotta get the heck outa Michigan for a while!

I'm not sure I actually like what they did here, but it's certainly interesting.

So, um, how do they get in, it's very obviously a building. I can't tell if the church is there or if this is one picture transposed on another. Otherwise, it's cool imagery.

I really would love to know where and what this is...I would imagine Arizona? It's a very interesting image with strong colors for a "sacred" place and yet the image works for me

Lovely and very appropriate for this challenge. Nature and a symbol of Christ. This is indeed a sacred place.

I've been here (Sedona, I think) and the feeling is truly sacred and inspiring. Great shot

I can't wait to find out where this is. Very cool looking structure - good choice of subject for the topic. The picture's pretty good. The lighting could maybe be a little better - more vibrant. It looks just a little flat - like maybe the bottom part is in a cloud's shadow. Horizontally, the composition's OK, but a little more sky might have helped it vertically - it feels a little closed-in.

Looks like something out of a scifi movie. The saturation is very rich bringing out the greens, blues and reds to full advantage. Top composition too.

Fascinating place - though I'm not sure your depictio of it is all it could be: the light is pretty flat and harsh, and you haven't managed to get any real depth of texture into those rocks to show the contrast with the smooth stone of the church. I guess this is one of those shots best taken with the warm low light of dawn or dusk ...

Very interesting shot. I hope you tell us.......is there a building under there somewhere, or just the cross? I love the rock colors and green of foliage, then blue-blue of sky. Very attractive photo.

Gorgeous blues and reds, balanced nicely by the greens. There is great composition, but the shot is a bit out of focus in spots

I remember this church, and your photo does a good job of showing how impressive it is. The colors are vibrant and lovely, and I like the composition. Honestly, I don't think there is any other angle that would do it justice.

Frank Lloyd Wright's Chapel in AZ - A nice composition with the angle of the building reaching out to the top left, but anchored by that beautiful rock with a touch of green. Nicely done.

My grandmother has had a picture of this church on her wall for 20 years. A beautiful place, and you've captured it extremely well, showing its integration with the nature around it. There seems to be a slight "halo" around the rock, maybe from slight oversharpening or overcorrection of the blue sky. A softer focus or very slight gaussian blur might help that.

Very cool! I love the colors -- and that's quite the unusual church! Arizona...?
