mushrooms at a window. different curves for mushrooms and reflection, using layer mask. slightly different sharpness for mushrooms and reflection. Shadow highlights on mushrooms to tone down the intense sunlight on them.

and I just realized that a mushroom is neither a fruit nor a vegetable. will I be dnmc'd?

Awespme image here with so much to see and learn from. First I love the detail and clarity of the fungi as they really do pack a pinddh to the viewer.
I also love the soft muted, almost abstract colors, of the reflection one can see in the background. In all a very delightfull image here, for us to enjoy.....

Wow I guess voters really did pick up on the mushroom not being a vegetable. I really didn't even think about that when I was voting. But based on the comments I wonder if people really didn't vote as high because of this.

"Gazing upon our own reflection" is a good entry into the Fruit and Vegetable Challenge, heck all the mushrooms I buy are in the produce department. I really think your lighting allows this image to stand out. The lighting really gives us more depth to the focal point. I also really like the placement of the focus, not a typical shot, very nice. I think your choice for the background is awesome because it really is something different. I am not sure if you used the screen for lighting purposes but it really adds a nice feature to the shot.

Overall I think this is a very strong shot, maybe the score would have been a little higher is the challenge was something like The Produce Section, or Mushrooms. Very nice work as usual.

I love this, especially the separation of the mushrooms from the background. They pop out of the picture. I like the colors in the reflection and the texture the screen adds. I gave it a 10 and have no problem with mushrooms in a veggie challenge -- I put them in my veggie omelets.

I adored this shot and gave it a 6, even though I thought it DNMC. I'm usually not the DNMC police, but it is not a fruit or a vegetable. This would definitely make top ten in a fungus challenge though! LOL!

Dude, you were totally robbed. Believe it or not, this was my top pick for this challenge. Really!

Nice setup. I actually like the lighting choice here. The side/back lighting gives a nice depth to the subjects. I like how the mushrooms slowly loose depth in the photo, though I might have preferred the foreground to be within the focused depth. Minor thing. The reflection is wonderful. I had a background window screen once, and got beaten down for it, but here I think it is subtle and works well. Nice image.

I doubt many would have stopped long enough to give a DNMC because of a mushroom. I think that takes too long of a pause when voting to register, and we all know how click happy us voters can be.

Don, you are always counted upon to be original. Although I admit I'm not wild about part of the foreground (lighting is too harsh IMO), I think the background is brilliant.

Don, you did a great job with the focus and the bokeh. I think this would have been a lot better with a black background instead of the reflection. JMO.

I like the composition and lighting... there's a busy background but the lighting/composition draw my eye towards the subject, so the background adds interest without really competing.

Aren't these mushrooms? Interesting photo and fun to look at, but I imagine you'll get hammered on the connection to the challenge. I just looked them (mushrooms) up and technically I guess they qualify as they are considered the "fruiting body". Hmmm...learn something new everyday. :D Good luck in the challenge (you're going to need it). :P
