I haven't been to an SCA event for a long time -- good looking armor! I think you did a pretty good job of showing the fury and confusion of battle, though I'm not sure that soldiers in battle "hate" the enemy in the same way an individual might; that might have influenced the score you got. |

The technicals: This shot intrigues me. I like it quite a bit. However, it looks like you have too much contrast going on. I pulled it into PS and the histogram shows huge spikes at both ends. While a high contrast image may be able to imply some of the grit of war, I wonder if it was overdone. Primarily, the place it leaves you is that overall I think the shot is a tad overexposed. I primarily see this in the lack of detail on the hat on the right but also in the lack of color on the hay. Because of the high contrast you can't alter the midtones too much to try to save those areas. The focus and freezing of action are both excellent.
The feel: Again, I like it. If I could do anything with it, I would have either wanted to shoot from a higher vantage or a lower one in an attempt to completely fill the canvas with people. I don't like that you can "see through" the scrum at the top of the canvas. It would make no sense to cut heads off, but a perspective change could have fixed that.
The game: I think this was a bit underrated. Hate is a tough challenge because what people miss is you still need an appealing picture even though it is an unappealing subject. This goes down that road a fair amount. |

This score actually surprises me. This is a great photo that realy captures the challenge. The technicals are great. Nice and sharp. Great color. |

I'd say you captured the chaos quite well! It is indeed chaotic, and that often turns off voters - with only a second or two given during voting in most cases, it would have been hard to see a "focal point" here, prompting a quick punch of the 5 key and on to the next. I like the color and the chaos. And I really like the green and white bunny on the one shield. |

Hi Jim,
I didn't vote on this challenge either.
What first strikes me at this phtos is the harsh light, thus making it a bit difficult to concentrate on the photo. It's a bit like looking at a lake while the sun is reflecting on it. Otherwie, I think you managed to express the "hate" concept.

Hi Jim,
This is a nice action shot, I think the lighting had a bit to do with the lower score, there are somew harsh shadows thrown from some of the armor suits. The color is also a bit dull, could use some saturation. One other thing I see is no clear subject but alot of busy-ness. Alot of people (not me, but pointing it out) look for a defined subject in the photo.
Hope this helps.

I do find this cluttered in general. But this image also holds another personal interest for me...so I definitely wouldn't rate it in my low scoring images. |

there is no subject to this photo, my eye just wanders around looking for something bigger than a helmet to look at |

Good subject for the challenge, and lots of action in the photo. I would have liked to have seen a tighter shot with fewer combatants, which might have provided a stronger point of focus for the image. |

Wow! Neat capture, although it's so crowded with people and things it's difficult to tell what's happening here... baisically there's no subject, and no composition, really. But toehrwise everything else is wonderful here. |

It seems to be a good shot, but there is so much going on that it is difficult to discern exactly what you are trying to convey here. |

Way too much going on. I don't know where to look. Otherwise, good action, nice color. |
