 Probably not low key enough but I like it. The thread on the left is sewing thread - on the right is quilting thread. Quilting is another of my hobbies. I didn't do a whole lot of that while living in Texas - too durn hot! But will hopefully get a bit more done while I'm in Germany, as I can actually put quilts on my bed and sleep under them here!

Shot on my sewing table (gotta love Ikea!) with a shop light reflected off the wall. Adjusted white balance to tungsten then warmed it just a bit in RAW; levels, exposure, crops, sharpen, resize, border, save for web.

I think the double-meaning of "low-key" in your title adds to the meaning of the shot. I like the composition, and personally I think it's "dark enough" for the topic.

Hey Deb,

Isaw this shot earlier. I think it's low key in principle, but I almost feel that you had a little too much fill light to pull off low key to the satisfaction of the picky (mostly uninformed) DPC voter.

Lovely shot. I love the colors.

Hi,

I like the entry, I love the lighting and the composition. I personally think you got a bit ripped off from people not thinking that it is low key. I think it is quite lovely.

I'm just going to free flow this comment. I like the shot. It's quaint and I like the texture on the thread. No, it wasn't "low key" enough although looking at a histogram it does qualify. I'm torn between trying this in B&W and keeping the nice warm browns. I think I'd keep it in color. The biggest question is, "why low key?" I'm not sure I have the answer other than to meet the challenge. The texture provided from the side lighting is good, but you don't need low key to accomplish that.

This is a nice shot, Deb. I can picture it hanging on the wall of a thread shop, for instance. I like the shadows and how you used DOF to separate your subject.

Deb, I'm here after reading the thread; I didn't score this image highly, though I hope you know I usually like your shots. Setups to me need to be special, and the subject matter here just didn't grab me. It was well lit, though more shadows might have helped the low-key feel jump at you (the "normally" lit table to the right distracted me a bit when I first saw the image), and the composition and execution were spot on. I'm just not big on thread . . .

Deb, I definately think this is a low key shot. I think some of the voters think low key is black and white - which the majority of the top scorers submitted. Not taking away from any of those excellent shots, I believe you equally captured a creat low key shot. I see your rule of thirds in this too. I didn't vote in this challenge, but would have scored this very high - 9. Thanks for sharing.

Nice low key shot. I think this would have looked really nice on a darker table. Just my opinion which doesn't mean much. Nice compositon and soft colors. Focus is perfect.

This is a lovely composition, Deb, and the lighting is wonderful. I don't completely understand low key, but with the dark background, and heavy shadow on the left, it seems low key to me. I think the colors are excellent, and I really like this still life.

I like it too! I guess they were looking for black backgrounds with a little light on something, huh? I think it's plenty low key tho and a great composition. Something you could hang on a wall in your workroom.

this is a really nice, neat, well composed image. Its sharp in all the right places and soft in all other. the only critique would be less light to make it more low key. I would say its "lightly lit", still very nice image. 8
