Dr. Seuss said that "Yertle the Turtle" was modeled after the rise of Hitler. The book explained his feelings about fascism, and Nazis in particular. You can read the text here.

I'm glad you resisted the urge to stack them before you took the picture, although it looks like the big one is taking a step in that direction. :D I liked Yertle, it was my favorite book.

Look at the moss on that turtle! Is its mouth open too? Very interesting find. I'd like to see a little crop off the top too. Nice pic!

Well, ya got a 6 outta me, Julianne. Nicely focused, interesting subject. But most off all, thanks for teaching me about Seuss' protest via this book!

Image doesn't really bring out the subject well, and you seem to have a purple-fringing (chromatic aberration) problem with your camera.

The top of the image doesn't add anything to the composition. It might be better as a closer crop, possibly even pano.

In recognition of his first book, I would like to have seen some composition to bring the tribute together other than the title.

One of my favorite animals, that one is very moss covored, must be under cover, lol. The other is a big'un! Great clarity, and good colors. 8
