Day 2 with the Pentax-DA 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6

It rained today, which is an unusual thing for this area, but which we desperately need. I find that one of the best applications of a B&W photo is to enhance mood. This is never so important as when working with bleaker, darker, starker subjects. When I saw the rain, I knew I had a chance to get something worthy of a conversion.

This shot, while not the most interestingly stunning photograph, reminded me so much of a shot done with B&W film, that I knew I had to include it here. It has, for me, a beautiful and eerie quality to it. Satiny, yet rough. The light play on the skim of water on the wood surface is something I, personally, could stare at for hours.

Don't look for editing techniques here.. this is my personal little secret :) Feel free to comment good and bad, constructive, or destructive, whatever :)

reflections, ripples & drops - excellent abstract beauty.

This is one standout capture. Maybe just a bit too much much black/negative space at the top, but the rest of the image is amazing. The detail and the light is superb. A very serene feeling here. Great capture.

Great catch with the drops coming down. I like the ripples.

Moody and mysterious. I like the effect a lot. I'd be interested to see this cropped just below the diagonal line, keeping only the bottom half. I think the upper half detracts from the punch.

Perhaps some of the top could be cropped out? otherwise, well done.

The photo has a good, dark feel to it. The light looks liquid, which is fitting since you were photographing rain. I'm wondering if the top part needs to be so large; if a tighter crop at the top might benefit the composition.

Very moody, I can almost feel the gloom of a rainy day here, good quality conversion. As for you editing technique being a 'secret', wasn't it you who said we need to share our techniques so others can learn?... TUT TUT C'mon dude get ya editing techs out... LOL (don't grill me, Im joking)

a magic and haunting photograph .. very mysterious .. i would be hard pressed to know exactly wot this is without reading your comments .. but even so it has a beauty about it that transcends its subject .. the play of light, the droplets and the water radiating out, are all beautiful elements in a most unusual and pleasing image ..
after writing my comment i read kat's 'deduction' .. in a way i liked it better when i didnt know that it was a deck rail!! ..:)

Indeed it is, nice deduction.

Very interesting shot. It made me look at it real close. I love the tones. Once I gave it good consideration I could see the drips.

I am learning to so appreciate abstract art. When its well done and has such appealing qualities -- like interesting textures and contrasts, and shades. I like it too!

Beautiful. It has a constant sense - drip drip drip - something we can all relate to. The minimal light is so subtle - just enough to create tonal variance.

This is dreadful, which I think is exactly what you were going after. It just glows with dreadfulness. I love it!

Deep darkness and abstract qualities, give this image its punch.....

Lovely and moody. Maybe a bit more definition in the raindrops would really create an even better composition. Your light, which just glances across the surface, really makes the image sing.

I really like the lighting and contrast, I̢۪d probably crop it a little differently; there is a lot of empty space on top that doesn̢۪t do much for the composition. IMO

Eerie was the first thing that came to mind. Like the lighting quite a bit.
