Challenge: Action Shot (Advanced Editing I*)
Camera: Nikon Coolpix 5700
Location: Nebraska
Date: Jan 1, 2004
Aperture: F5.0
ISO: 200
Shutter: 1/2000
Galleries: Still Life, Action
Date Uploaded: Jan 3, 2004

Resized, ran through neatimage, adjusted color saturation, brightness contrast, and added border.

I know that this shot has many flaws and isn't necessarily the best quality but I love the capture of the flame and the smoke coming out the end of the gun. I'm not expecting this shot to do real well, I will be happy if my score breaks a 5.

Greetings from the Critique Club

Initial thoughts/My opinion
Oh, what happened here: looks like an enlarged thumbnail. Lot of action, but to be honest: I don't like guns.

Content/Composition
I don't want to address my disliking of guns here, because that completely my personal taste.
You captured of course a moment of great action: there is almost nothing having more action in the sense of speed, sound etc. than a firing gun. Also that you captured the gunfire and the smoke is very well done: how many shots did it take to get it right?
The way you presented the scenery is well made too: the way you cropped it is well thought out and the balance between the sky and ground is good. Also having the gun horizontally is good.

Camera work -technically
Exposure seems OK although the man's shirt is a little bright, but it adds to the mood of the image. Regarding the focus I can not say much due to the extremely low quality.

Digital Processing - Technical
Of course I have not seen the original, you probably needed to crop out a small section out of it. However, the image is simply dominated by digital artefacts coming from need image and maybe from the jpeg compression. A smaller size might have been better here or a strong artistic filter might have helped to overcome the technical shortcomings.
BTW: I really would love to see the original to see if there couldn't be another approach to increase its quality.

Fits the challenge
Of course it fits very well.

Personal Remark
That it did so bad could have honestly be foreseen: DPC-voters, especially in member-challenges are very much looking for the image quality and vote everything down that comes short here, no matter what subject is shown. I had this experience too with my Cliché entry.
By this I learned that if an image is below a certain standard, it's better not to submit at all.

Good luck for your further submissions

You have frozen the action well, but it is a shame the quality is poor and looks massively sharpened to compensate.

Image quality suffers due to size reduction.

I didn't vote low on this because of the gun! I did vote low on this because it's not very much in focus (Not even the parts that aren't moving) and in fact it looks like a capture from a video...

I like the idea, "The action" of a rifle. The execution is not as good as the idea. Extremely pixelated. I think it would be better to see the rifleman's face as well.

Would be great if the photo quality was higher.

The image quality is rather low here. I"m not sure if this has been over-processed in a neat-image type program or if it has been cropped too much or some other problem has come up, but there really is hardly any detail available here at all, and it is a problem.

Nice timing, but very poor quality picture.

Great timing! The sweater and face are pretty overexposed; the whole shot might have been helped with some work on the levels.

The composition of this shot is fantastic, and your timing was incredible to get the muzzle blast. Unfortunately, the quality really kills it.

Great action to capture but it's just too blurry and too oversharpened. Nice try though. :-)

Time is perfect - very tough to get the muzzle flash. Not in focus.

Some bad compression. Looks like it distorted your shot.

Maybe a little overprocessed. I tried getting a capture like this, but your timing is better than mine.

This is a good idea, and excellent timing on your part. You might want to get a better camera though...the compression and artifacts really detract from this. Great take on the challenge though

Looks like you lost a whole lot of definition when you shrunk the size. Nice catch on the flame coming out of the barrel.

Looks like you put some texture on top of the image and it doesn't do it for me. Great timing, nice to see the flames coming out of the barrel. I would have done less "photo-shopping" on this one (given that the original was good enough, you can't really tell how the original quality of the shot is.

nice moment of action captured, but way too much sharpening was done to this image.

this would have been great if it were in focus, i like the way you captured the fire coming out of the barrel....maybe a tripod would have helped
