 A mother holds her child up so she can reach her father for one last touch before he deploys to Iraq

Thank you to everyone who commented on this photo. It was taken as the soldiers of the 100th Engineer Company were deploying (I stayed the entire day with the unit, including waiting with them at Green Ramp and taking photos as they got on the aircraft).

This submission was an experiment for me. I wanted to see if anything had changed in the hearts of the voters here at DPC. They haven't. I won't be renewing my membership when it expires in 6 days. I'm not an "art" photographer. I am, however, a good photographer and I LOVE my job with the paper at Fort Bragg.

Great photo, and deserving of a much higher score. It's really too bad that so many people voted on how pretty of a shot it is and not how good of a shot it is. This picture touches the heart more than the eyes, and in my opinion that is what photography is about.

I think this shot was vastly under-rated! I can't believe some of the ones (mine included!) that finished before this heart-tugging capture. This should have been much higher up on the list. :(

Maybe not the best shot in terms of composition, but certainly the most emotionally touching one I've seen.
