The butterfly, a Gray Hairstreak (Strymon melinus), is probably male, because there was a bit of orange on its abdomen. This species has a wide range of distribution throughout most of the continental U.S.

The flower is fewflower scurfpea (Psoralea tenuiflora), a prairie plant common throughout the midwestern U.S.
