This was a photo from a National Geographic "100 Best Unpublished Pictures." I didn't have time to go look for something, so the Zoo came to me.

Mounted image on piece of plexiglass, and used flash at an angle that gave the least reflections. Used fast shutter to make background go dark. Used packing peanuts ground-up for snow, and there you have it.

Burned the dark background, blurred the snow, and edited out some "Snow" that didn't look like snow.

Little too dark around the head.

It's a bit dark and the focus seems just a spot off...

I like the profile you've captured...very interesting angle of view, but the image appears too dark and the animals head is blending in with the background. Meets the challenge theme well.

I think Penguins are really cute. There is a lot of detail lost here because the image is pretty dark.

Too dark

Its too underexposed. This kind of has a dark artsy feel to it, which I like. I don't feel that's a good quality in the photojournalistic world of magazines like NG. It's a little too much like a mug shot.

The soft, fluffy texture of the penguin contrasts nicely with the rough look of the ice. Both are rendered well enough to make that contrast clear.

Not quite enough detail, a little dark.

This is way too dark to make out details.

Very nicely done (albeit a tad dark for me). Good job!

Would look better, I think, if it were lighter; I can't see what's in the shadows.

Nice, but I could use more depth and contrast with the B & W.

A good subject but I can't see it very well. Suggest more light and filling the frame with this guy.
