This is composed of 3 consecutive photos, taken at the start of the lunar eclipse. Exposure bracketing was used to get the sky shot, then darkened a little for the sky around the moon, and a few minutes later, a break in the clouds gave a breif look at the moon. I'm guessing there's going to be a few moon photos this month, but hopefully this one is different enough to not be boring.
Editing was a challenge, trying to line up moving clouds and long exposures to do gradient contrast masking. I know I'll probably get whipped for the fact that the moon looks stuck on. It was really hard to blend it in when behind it is a huge blown out spot from the overexposed moon!
I edited it up without regard for the challenge, and I was just luck that this month's free study was Expert Editing. I love the way it looks painted, and full of such rich colour! There's no special effect filters, just the contrast masking of 3 photos, levels, burning around the edges and USM.
Post challenge -- Oh, and for anyone wondering, there's no mountains or seas or anything in this image. It's all clouds. (Yes, OK, there is a sea of tranquility and a mount olympus up there somewhere, but that's just being picky. :) ) Well, it looks like this image was not so good for DPC, and my 2nd choice would have done better (because there was an almost identical shot from someone else). Live and learn. :) |

A nice, warm surreal image. It took me a moment to make out the mountains...at least I think that's what they are. My eyes tend to get continually drawn to the brightness of the moon. |

Nice capture - I like the earthy tones - The repeated image in the lower part of the pic is a little distracting |
