I to, live in North Carolina and this image hits the nail so squarely on the head it's scary.

Seen it for the first time! Excellent photo and humor! Made me laugh.

What the P H U K! 97th place... that is just stupid. It should have done much better. Great picture. Excellent composition. Love the red apple. It is surrealistic and I like that.

As clean as this urinal looks, I don't think I'd wanna eat that apple. Very nice composition - everything looks very sharp.
09/29/2002 10:56:00 PM
John's john? I'm blushing.
09/29/2002 09:30:00 PM
Ok, John... now you're just showing off! Only you could make a photo of a urinal at all attractive, and (dare I say it?) quite pleasing to the eye. I like the framing with the stalls, and I love the look of the chrome in black and white. Is that the apple from last week's challenge? :-) 10 --sohr--
09/29/2002 12:11:00 PM
You really ought to get that prostate checked if this really represents your world. :) I have to admit that it is an artistic shot though. :)
09/29/2002 12:04:00 PM
Dear John... All the facts point this to a certain individual... Nice job of shining that thing up! 7 nards656
09/28/2002 10:31:00 PM
actually, this is a pretty good shot. could have used a little more light on the bottom.
09/28/2002 09:52:00 PM
Hey! I'm so glad you used my suggestion for a title! :) As usual, a very interesting shot. I'd say that I hope you didn't eat the apple, but in addition to it being stuck on a urinal, I recall you said it was plastic anyway!

Anyway, I like what you did with the saturation levels here. Bringing out the apple (and the little thingy you pee on) is very effective here. The detail is very crisp, and I like the slight reflection at the bottom quarter of the urinal. (Those are definitely some words I wouldn't have anticipated typing today.)

Where has that Apple been????

Setzler? Excellent shot! One of my highest rated this week. -arnit

If there is hidden meaning here, it's not apparent to me. Looks like you missed the challenge from two weeks ago - Fruits and Vegetables. Not a bad shot though.

Oh man, this is great. First of all, very clever take of the challenge! The deep red apple and the teensy sliver of the red urinal matt are perfectly positioned foils. Nicely exposed. Only thing that bugs me is the scar on the wall where they apparently replaced the jumbo urinal with this sleek new model. (9)

09/26/2002 07:15:00 PM
Are you ever going to eat that apple?
09/26/2002 03:39:00 PM
john, is that you? ;-)
09/26/2002 02:26:00 PM
darn, that apple looks oddly familiar ;-) nice one, Master Setzler.

Hillariously dadaist expression.
09/26/2002 01:05:00 PM
Well.....I do like it! Not crazy about the subject matter, but you did an excellent job with it. I don't think I have ever seen a urinal look so.....pretty! And clean! And shiny! The lighting is very nice. I love the touch of red at the bottom to go with the apple. Very unusual and creative. But, this is your corner of the world? Are you a custodian of the Men's Room?
09/26/2002 12:20:00 PM
Hmmm, that apple looks familiar. Did you have to bring in your crome polish to set up the shot or were you luck enough to find like this? Is the normal color of the tile and doors in gray scale? If not, I want to know how you did it. My only gotcha is that I would have liked to have seen it rotated a half degree clockwise so the tiles would be parallel with the borders. joanns

Would have preferred a BBQ stand, but what the heck, gave it a 9.
09/26/2002 01:45:00 AM
I love the little splashes of red. 9. byetko.
09/25/2002 10:51:00 PM
Hmm, I think I missed this part of Hickory last time I was through there. I am curious as to why you didn't crop out the cinderblock wall at the top. Does this mean that your part of the world is in the toilet?? Interesting choice of subject, and I am so glad that you put the apple in there - it really kicks up the visual interest for me !! lhall-7
09/25/2002 03:08:00 PM
I like apples, but I wouldnt eat this one.... ewwwww. I think this would have worked for me more if the bottom of the photo had not been so dark
09/25/2002 08:52:00 AM
Did you eat the apple?
09/25/2002 01:54:00 AM
The subject is pretty well exposed but the composition is not one of your best. It really bugs me that there is something red in the urinal and I can't see what it is. On top of the urinal lies your forbidden fruit again...I'm so glad it's fake since food in the bathroom is a general turn off to me.
Technically the image is fine but I don't find it appealing. On the other hand I sense your sarcasm so that makes the image effective. Giving you a 7. Good luck in the challenge. Grayce aka Gracious
09/24/2002 09:47:00 PM
That's right...Kim is not allowed in the little boys room...LOL
09/24/2002 07:40:00 PM
should got the thingy in the toilet out of the picture. The apple needs to be isolated.
09/24/2002 03:16:00 PM
Did you miss the fruit and vegetable contest, so you're entering your photo here instead, lol?! Very clever and *different...a really fun and eye catching photo!
09/24/2002 02:08:00 PM
No doubt the vice cop was named Eggleston! Is this the beginning of a trend. Nice lighting on the apple. JEM
09/24/2002 08:42:00 AM
NOW I see why a apple a day keeps the doctor away. Let's see now, most waking hours are spent at work so that would mean it meets the challenge and with so little time for a break the snack while in the restroom fits so I think we have a winner !!!!!!!!!!
09/24/2002 12:33:00 AM
I would have preferred if the apple were exposed a little brighter, or that the red of the apple were a little brighter. 6 sjgleah
09/23/2002 09:31:00 PM
LOL!!!!

09/23/2002 08:42:00 PM
Like the way you have produced a monochrome picture with just the two areas of red

LMAO, John!!!! ;-) Composition, clarity, mood - 9 kathleenm
09/23/2002 03:35:00 PM
great photo...I guess it was in color and all the colors were taken out exept red...good idea
09/23/2002 03:18:00 PM
Is this apple REAL? karmat

LOL at this! Would the esteemed member from Hickory so identify his work? Doubtful ... If not his work, is this a blatant attempt by someone else to trade on his reputation? Maybe ... Either way, I like the witty inclusion of 'that apple', the way my attention is then drawn to the only other red object ... excuse me, I'll be right back ...
09/23/2002 09:08:00 AM
Eww.... an apple on a urinal! YUK! Excellent photographic composition, in my honest opinion, though. Nasty. Daring and wonderful at the same time!
09/23/2002 09:08:00 AM
Too bad for the red thingy in the bottom of the urinal... takes away from the beautiful red apple. Does this mean that you spend lots of time peeing or are you an urologist ;P?
09/23/2002 09:05:00 AM
LOL nice one John. I'm not sure if this is the same one on Photosig or not because I never noticed the apple there before. That is great tie in to the other pic.
09/23/2002 08:57:00 AM
Easily the best entry - I love the deep evocative feel of this, how it could be anyone's corner of the world yet you've made it your own. The religious iconography held within the apple speaks volumes to the soul of both the photographer and viewer and really brings me into this piece of work. Obviously the symbolism of the red and white together combine to remind us of the suffering and bloodshed in the world while the white porcelin represents the bones of all the poor innocents. The cross, towering over the symbol of Eden evidently shows how Christ died for the original sins commited in the first garden and you've very cleverly included the symbolism of the snake, just by association in this context.

The more I look at this, the more I get from the obviously startling amount of thought and preparation that has been placed in the composition and elements that have been selected. The very choice of a urinal, where the water washes away the sins, like an original baptism is inspired, along with the dual metaphor of the water turning into the wine coloured strainer at the bottom - again a clear signal of the power represented within this landmark image.

This is a wonderfully emotive picture reminding us of the suffering going on in the world and how your corner, my corner and everyone's corner is part of the same group conciousness. If I could give it an 11 I would (10)

After a second review, I don't think this meets the challenge so I've revised my score (1)

I hope you don't go down the toilet with this shot. That apple looks strangely familiar, like we saw it in last weeks challenge!!
09/23/2002 06:13:00 AM
The apple inclusion was a nice touch. :) Kaz
09/23/2002 02:59:00 AM
LOL. I think it's cute as a sarcasm to last week's winner :) and it's a valid corner, i guess :-) paganini (did you eat the prop? i hope not)
09/23/2002 01:52:00 AM
Great shot! I can't think of a single thing I'd change... but there must be one, because I'm only giving you a 1. Good luck with the challenge!
09/23/2002 01:38:00 AM
Great idea!
09/23/2002 01:24:00 AM
Nice colour
09/23/2002 12:43:00 AM
LOL.. oh my.. so THIS is the potty shot. ;)
09/23/2002 12:40:00 AM
I like the comment. Perhaps Jim would have put the apple in the urinal!
