big thanks to my *fabulous* boyfriend ' . substr('//www.dpchallenge.com/images/user_icon/21.gif', strrpos('//www.dpchallenge.com/images/user_icon/21.gif', '/') + 1) . ' ZeppKash for holding the lights and helping me set up.

nothing too exciting in the setup. just little markers stood up on a white cardboard box with three lights pointed at 'em. PP in PS, again, nothing exciting... crop, rotate, levels, curves to make the whites white, hue/saturation, USM, more curves, resize and save.

thanks for the votes and comments! i still can't believe this got a ribbon!!! and only my second challenge!!!! WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!

i was trying to go for a clean, colorful, simple picture because it was my first attempt at a "studio" set up and i didn't want to bite off more than i could chew. i learned a lot about how NOT to light something properly and what to fix for next time... and thankfully i figured out how to use photoshop to correct for my lack of proper lighting, mostly :) i'm pretty happy with the result and DEFINITELY happy with the ribbon, although if i did this shot again i would try for a wider DOF, and use MORE LIGHT!

It seemed to me that telling somebody about "not fresh" idea was enough to make him think: well... maybe really? - it's enough to look around here - and next time to make something never done before what would catch eye right away.
If under useful criticism you mean technical questions - for me, good idea is #1. Sorry, bud...

... while i find constructive criticism quite helpful, i did not particularly find *your* comment helpful, since it seemed to me to be negativity without any pointers on where to go. of all the comments i've received, i've only not checked two comments as helpful... yours being one. i think that speaks for itself. if i'm not allowed to choose which comments i feel are helpful, what's the button for?

Congrats!

sorry, but to me it looks too primitive. There are too many colorful sticks on this site taken to consider this idea fresh and interesting...

The lighting isn't very flattering. It's a great idea, and overall fairly nice shot.

I enjoy the concept however the DOF to me is not flattering to it. The one light green marker in the center stands out from the rest when I think they all should have the same focus.

Nicely organised, and well shot technically. Somewhat obvious and lacking a real spark other than as a pleasant series of colours for me, however.
