Post-Challenge: No worries! The substance truly is peanut butter. No matter how desparate I am for a photo...nothing but real food is coming anywhere close to my lips or one of my subjects.
This is my brother-in-law, Michael! Great personality! Very laid-back with a rye wit about him because he loves to tease just as much as I do. When I explained the challenge, he was right on it...ready to pose at the very suggestion. (His daughter, KEA, is going on two in a couple of months. My little girl, Shanna, turns five in September.)
Between us we've changed a small mountain of dirty diapers (like any other modern father) so nobody needs to worry that we would ever actually misunderstand the difference between peanut butter and poopy,...Brother! :}
The truth is...Misunderstanding is the story of my life. The only time I am really understood is when I speak, like a lawyer in a jury trial, but by the time I get to the end of my thought...whoever I'm talking to...is asleep.
But on the upside, My Voice is listed in the Pharmacist's Bible as a tranquilizer... :}:}:}:}:}:}
My wife, even says that when we were dating at Tennessee Temple University in Chattanooga, that she used to tune in the college radio station for my 11:00 PM show, and she would go right to sleep! :) |

First Impression
Nasty, gross, YUCK! Then funny. :-)
Looking Deeper
As a parent I connected immediately to the photo and the humor - after I got past the gross part (I guess being a parent helped with that too).
The concept fit the challenge quite well IMO, and I think many of the commenters recognized the connection as well. Could be why roughly 10% of the voters commented, and they scored it 1.5pts above the end average.
So what happened? I think either a number of people didn't get it and voted it low, however I think maybe a larger number were just plain grossed out by it and gave it a low score.
Kind of shows how subject matter can be a factor in how well or poorly an image does in challenges here. I could be wrong (often am). :-)
Outside of subject I don't see that much out of place on technical grounds that would drag the score down on this photo. There's a little bit of glare from the flash (tongue & peanut butter), but barely. The photo does seem just a tad dark, but yet the white of the diapers seem about right exposure wise. Compositionally I think you placed the objects correctly with a nice triangle formed between the hand, diapers, and face. One consideration...the border adds to the dark feel of the image and blends in with the darker areas. A border with a single black pixel, then white, (or vice-versa) would be interesting to try (to see any difference in overall feel).

It took me a little while to figure out what was going on partly because the diapers are cut off. A little wider frame might work better. I also don't like that the top of the head is cut off and the larger frame would help there as well.
Definitely wins the Yuck award. :) |
