Well, I don't care how many times it is done if it is done well and this is. I've been trying to figure out what the white and black is at the top... is it the camera protected by plastic to keep it from getting wet? Any setup shots?

the 1 is uncalled for i agree with that, but 4's and 5's and to stretch it a 3 wouldn't be unexpected though, and yes that would be for someone who had voted on every photo and still found this one less interesting than others. as far as a type of photo being identified as a ribboner during voting, yeah, i think a lot of times it IS obvious if the photo is good. but when its a photo that people have already seen ribbon in the past, it can change your opinion of it even if its flawless. MJ dunked from the free throw line and shocked the world. a lot of people can do that now but it doesn't feel as shocking-

Seriously, who would be so dumb to give out 1s just because a photo is not interesting for them? Those votes would be scrubbed at rollover, or do you really believe most of the other shots in the challenge would be far more interesting for such a person?
Besides that, you could try and check last 200 challenges ribboners for a similar shot and look if you find more than one. Even if you were right, it would only strengthen the theory that a specific kind of probable ribboners is easily identifiable. |

Wow.
Ive seen alot of this kind of pictures. The ones that are in water. They are a little over-done, But this is a very good shot anyway.
Well done.

Very well-executed shot. I need to use flash more in my shots - you show me what is possible. This image is not an easy thing to accomplish - congratulations on your blue ribbon! |

Originally posted by Drake: Congrats on your win - this is a great shot. I read your comments with interest, about people "purposfully" voting low - on an obviously great picture. I had a couple of 1's on my shot also (5th place Swans). Is this a regular thing?

Unfortunately yes. If you have a look at the top 5 of almost any challenge, you will notice that every shot that looks like a typical dpc ribboning shot ( i.e. strong impact, tack sharp, well exposed, mass appealing subject) gets more 1s and 2s than shots that are not as easily recognizable as ribbon candidates, For some examples see the 4th in "Black and white", the 3rd, 4th and 5th in "Pet Portrait", 3rd, 4th and 5th in "Leading Lines", 2nd in "Peace" etc. So obviously there are some people that try to identify a future ribboner and vote it down by purpose. |

Something really needs to be done with obviously jealous inept supposed "photographers" giving ridiculous low scores for images like this.
Seems it happens every contest and sometimes can make the difference between places or even getting a ribbon.
The odd low scores should be thrown out.

WOW Oliver! faultless execution and a technically perfect stock image. You mastered light and all the workflow for a sharp, clean and bright shot. I can imagine you (in the near future) applying all that skills and producing great and worth photographs. Congrats on the high score and the Blue. |

This picture is strong because it has a variety of texture. The background the outside and the inside of the lemon and the water bubbles and ripples all have different textures to add the picture. |
