Challenge: Pattern III (Basic Editing)

Saw this circular pattern repeated on a fence that seemed to stretch for an entire block. The sun was shining on it in a way that seemed to reflect the garden behind it onto the iron.

I like this shot and I like the foreground oof and the narrow depth of field but would have preferred it a hair wider or shifted just slightly forward. My eye is distracted by the front of the ring that is in focus being out of focus. I think the whole image would have felt sharper if that whole ring had been in focus.

First of all, I liked this one when voting. Having shallow DOF in the foreground of a shot is a love it or leave it kinda thing to some people. Perhaps it's even an acquired taste. I personally like foreground OOF when it serves a purpose. This is a pretty good shot - definitely meets the challenge and I agree that the colors beyond the fence really add nicely to this. The shallow DOF, to me, emphasizes the repetition of the pattern. If you have the chance (and think to do so - that's the part I always forget) try shooting things like this with different settings, different focal points. That will give you an idea of what looks good, what works.

I really like the patterns. I didn't vote on this but probablywould have given it a 6 because I really like the rings and the lines. The biggest thing keeping me from going higher is the very shallow DOF. The extreme definition of the focal plane doesn't allow my eyes to move easily away from those middle two rings. Closing down to f/8 may have improved the flow. Keep in mind, that's just my humble opinion and I'm a relative newbie.

Just editing to add that I agree with those tht would have moved the focal plane forward or back, perhaps using the rule of thirds as a guide.

I like this image, but i think it would have been better if you had focus starting on the second ring and the fading out.

the lines in this photo define the positive characteristics of this image.

Its very hard to see the pattern of the fence since only two are in focus.

I think the DOF is too limited in this one. The lighting works though

Very effective intrepretation of the challenge. My only issue is your dof choice. Is there a reason why you chose the center of the fence? There is no visual clue as to the importance of that area. I would suggest bring everything forward or moving everything back.

This is the exact fence I saw in Manchester NH this weekend around their town green... I like the flow you created with the DOF. Nice work.

good dof

it might have been better if you focused on the entire length of fence.

I don't like it's focuse on something in the middle and everything in front of it and behind it is completely blurry
