Challenge: Free Study 2008-04 (Advanced Editing VII)
Camera: Nikon D200
Lens: Nikon AF-S DX NIKKOR 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6G ED VR II
Date: Apr 26, 2008
Aperture: f4
ISO: 100
Shutter: 1/80
Galleries: Macro, Floral
Date Uploaded: Apr 30, 2008

This was taken in my backyard while experimenting with f-stops with the 105mm Macro. I know that it's not an awesome landscape or a brilliant HDR but I think it is compositional a very good photo. I hope someone else likes it too.

If you had bug butt in this photo, it would have scored WAY HIGHER hehe. Now that I've really had a chance to think about this, I think the only thing I would have done different is crop off the top to get rid of the red. The red in the right corner isn't in a good spot to add to the photo. The leaf you have focused on looks wonderful and I'm thinking the red detracted from that.

But bug butt would have fixed all these issues :D

The green plant and background are competing for the frame. There is a little too much upper and right side space. You did well with the capture.
I think if the frame was more tight against the plant it might work. I think you were using rule of thirds, but in this case you can break the rule.

I like the way the fingers of red are reaching in from each side. Kind of like they're encouraging the bud in a way. Very nice composition.

I would be inclined to crop off the red flowers. The strong point of this image is the rich greens, subject matching background, and the reds distract from the subject, rather than positively adding colour.

Looks like Bee Balm. Nice structure to the bud and I like the hints of flowers in the corners showing what it will become.

very nicely captured, good colours, bright clean lines, nicely sharpend, maybe a crop to get rid of the distracting red flowers

i kind of wish that it was more monochromatic. I think it may be a little distracting with the red on the edges.

I think that this would have worked better without the flowers in the frame. They are visually too strong and pull the eye away from the bud.
