These are some of the men that mined one of the most challenging tunnels ever constructed in North America. This photo was taken shortly after the 19-ft diameter tunnel boring machine "holed through" into another tunnel that was constructed several years ago under another contract. The tunnel will soon become an essential part of our local water supply system.

OK. Now I understand. That tunnel has a lot to do with the snow pack melting so fast these days in the mountains that the old small bore pipes can no longer deal with the spring torrents and a lot of water is being lost. Hence they are changing the water system to make it possible to collect fast flowing melt water. England-France - the Channel Tunnel was pretty large too.

Holy cow! I really like this. Certainly tells a story that I would like to know now. If I were to nit pick and say what I'd like to see in an ideal world, a little more dramatic side lighting might have been really nice (and I'd be interested to see a wider shot too). :)
