I think this is a baby Grackle, guessing by the adult birds which seemed most upset by my paying attention to the little guy. He was in the grassy area next to a parking lot in a large park, and the mowers were on the way, so ... I interfered with nature taking its course. He protested and was able to achieve about an inch up in the air before flopping back down, so I'm guessing he was within a day or two of being fully fledged. Hoping, anyway. I didn't want to move him too far since when I first got there he had a lizard tail hanging out of his mouth, so some adult bird had most likely been bringing him food. I moved him to a little flat spot in a nearby tree made by the growth of a large branch. I know he was safe from the mower there and hoped he could avoid most predators and still be found by his birdie benefactor.

I am a mush when it comes to helpless critters!

Poor thing looks so sad and grumpy. Good for you for saving him from the mower. I'm always worried about the bunnies when I'm cuttin the grass.
