I like the poses (I meant smiles), so much more genuine than if they were not taken by family. "They" say having a light behind on the hair will separate them from a black background. You could maybe try a reflector or cardboard covered in aluminum foil placed behind to reflect some light back on them. Of course "they" are annoying because they always have suggestions on what you could do. :P
