It took me awhile to find the needle because it isn't in as sharp focus as the straw at the top of the image. When I did it didn't feel like much of a surprise since this was an obviously staged photograph. As a composition this photograph does not work for me. In order for the abstract quality of the straw to be really striking, the whole composition needs to be tightly focused. There is too much blurring in the foreground.

Serendipity to me means stumbling upon something pleasant. This image means purposely searching for something.

No - the serendipity is not to search for the needle, it is to actually FIND IT! Cute title. Good placement of the needle. It's a very busy image that doesn't do a lot for me for impact.

how is this serendipity??? I thought serendipity was finding something (ie. fortune) other then what you were looking for

Surrendipity doesn't involve searching for your subject...it involves stumbling upon a subject you didn't expect.
