Challenge: Silhouettes (Advanced Editing I)
Camera: Sony DSC-F828
Location: Old Airport park, Kailua Kona Hawaii
Date: Apr 14, 2004
Aperture: F/4
ISO: 64
Shutter: 1/1600
Galleries: Rural
Date Uploaded: Apr 18, 2004

This was taken at a very nice park next to the ocean that is a favorite with the locals. Almost every evening there are families enjoying the sunsets.

I adjusted the brightness and colors a bit as well as cloning a few items out of the photos.

Greetings from the Critique Club

Composition: Well composed. I like the colors and the shapes of the tree - the way the branches are bent. It's an excellent choice for a subject. I question the centering of the tree mostly because of the inclusion of the figures and picnic table. I would love the feeling that this was an isolated tree - or if the point of the photo is to say that these are people who have gathered to watch the sunset, then it would need to be framed to show them a bit more. The amount of foreground you chose anchors the subject well and really helps to bring the eye to the crown of the tree.

Background: The sky is wonderful, I love the color and I know it really is like that in Hawaii sometimes. I would prefer if the foreground grass had less detail to it.

Camera Work: (Focus/DOF/Exposure) - there is a slight grain to it or lack of focus. I'd like to see the tree particularly sharp - maybe play with a different speed?

Post Processing: The color/saturation/contrast is perfectly appropriate for this shot. If this were not for a silhouette challenge. I agree that the red halo around the heads of the people is a little distracting from the rest of the image.

The Challenge: Fits the challenge very well.

My Opinion: A nice shot, very evocative of place and time. I think the shot would benefit from an off-center tree, maybe closer crop of it or a slightly different angle to get rid of the people or closer in to actually get a better sense of the people.

this seems to be rather grainy looking in the shadowed areas, perhaps a little more contrast mught have helped. Good Luck, Todd. 5.

I know the sky can be like that but the colour looks exaggerated. The shape of the tree is beautiful though.

The layering effect is very nice. The framing of your models under the tree limbs is great. The rim lighting on the hair adds a nice touch. It may look a bit better if some of the left edge were cropped off - so that the tree is on the left edsge.

The overly-red outline on many of the subjects is distracting.
