Thanks!

In this case, the artificial lighting could use a little white balance correction to make the purple jacket stand out more. Good luck.

thanks for the email bob!

Welcome to dpchallenge. Take a look at my portfolio of entries, and don't be discouraged by your initial score. You've gotten some good advice in the comments. If you look at dpchallenge as a classroom - a place to learn, you will find it a very rewarding experience.
Some suggestions:
* Pay the $25 and become a member - lets you enter more challenges
* Participate in side challenges (Community, Forums; Challenges, Side Challenges and Tournaments). This is a great way to get more comments on your pictures (be sure to give lots of comments too), and to "meet" some of the folks here.
* Check out the How To... articles
* Buy & learn a photo editing package. Adobe Photoshop is the most common (and expensive). I use PaintShop Pro Photo X2 (retail is $99, can find on sale for $49).
* Shoot lots of pictures - best advice I ever got, from a friend who worked in a media center for a non-profit organization. Forget the rules, and shoot, shoot, shoot. You can learn something from every picture, and sometimes when you break the rules, you get a great shot. (Most of the time, however, there is a reason for the rules...)
Looking forward to more of your work.

Nice first try, the people are a bit too out of focus though. This could've been a bit better from a different angle too, I think.

This an interesting perspective however the person wearing purple is very close to dead center making the image quite static. Also, being this far away from the camera makes the detail rather hard to see. Putting him more on the bottom left third line I think would work better.

Also, the white balance seems to be a bit off, as in too yellow/orange.

Very interesting. Too bad its not Purple(but you probably already heard that)

It's a good setting for the photo, and the fact that it's night time adds something extra to it too, which I like. I think people will pick up on the fact that the purple isnt a prominant enough part of the image, as if you look at the other entries the purple colour is dominant, even if it is small. The bright lights distract from it a bit though, meaning It's slightly blured. For a first entry it's still a good shot, and you'll become accustomed to the type and style of shot people enter so it'll become easier for you. : )

Great composition. Would have been nice to get the subject to 'freeze' his position for a sec. just to make him stand out from the rest a little more.

Firstly, Congrats on Submitting. Time to jump off the deep end, and keep submitting each week. Don't get turned off by low marks early, and try to keep inproving your skils.
OK, the focus of the image is the front left, making everything else out of focus. Needed a greater depth of field, and the purple needed to be in focus.
Also, for a challenge like this, the photo needs to scream purple, so the person needed to be larger in the frame.
Did you Post Process your image? There are many things you are allowed to do in Basic Editing that will also improve your shot. The colours int his are a little uninspiring, and would have been great if the Purple was a bit more vivid. Read the Rules for what you are allowed to do, and play with photoshop/lightroom or whatever program you have.
Good Luck and keep Submitting!!

It would be hard to argue that purple was the subject of the photo, I'd suggest paying more attention to the challenge in the future.

try adjusting wb (white balance) prior to shooting. If not you can still correct it (digitally) if you shoot and process in raw. Colors look off probably due to dominance of tungsten light. I like the guidelines here. Hardly see any purple though (the guy's jacket?)
Good luck in dpc!!

Try and avoid using titles of this like. People will be put off by it and will most likely penalize you for it because they may think you are trying for the 'sympathy' vote.

Not bad, it's tough to tell if the man walking towards the camera is wearing a purple shirt (being a purple challenge I assume he is).

Congratulations on joining us in this crazy madcap adventure. If you hang in for awhile, I can guarantee that it will be a rewarding one! What I might suggest would be to make the purple object more the focal point for the photograph. Also, you could adjust the white balace to remove the yellow hue caused by the street lights. This in turn would make the purple sweatshirt pop! Best of luck to you. :-)

is that a purple jacket? a bit tiny...
08/20/2008 09:15:41 AM
I think if you color corrected ths a little that purple would really pop out more!

Extra point for you then.

Needs more purple

Nice shot the rail makes a nice leading line and the people add interest and a sense of scale. It seems like the bridge is leaning to the left maybe a little clockwise rotation would fix it.
