Challenge: Purple III (Basic Editing)
Camera: Nikon D700
Lens: Nikon AF Micro-Nikkor 60mm f2.8D
Date: Aug 17, 2008
Aperture: f14
ISO: 800
Shutter: 1/80 s
Galleries: Water, Food and Drink
Date Uploaded: Aug 19, 2008

I was doing some testing to see if the D700 did my water shots as good as the D50 and thought this might be o.k. for the challenge.

Post challenge:
I really don’t know what to say, except thanks, thanks, thanks!!
Again, I was really uncertain if this would appeal to the voters (sorry yanko ;-) because it was really only a test for my D700 but fitted the challenge fine. It started off pretty badly but settled in around 6.2, 6.3, which was fine with me. However, after a couple of days the score started rising and, for the last few days it’s been at a steady 6.7. Yippeee!!

A few mentioned I hadn’t added how I did this, so here goes:

This is neither a water drop/bubble, nor a marble. It’s a very small (hollow) glass ball I found in a local junk shop. There were four and I bought them all. In the meantime this is the only one I haven’t smashed ;-)
For this challenge entry and the three outtakes I backlit with one flash and used the other flash to light from underneath. Draped different coloured transparent sheets over the flashes, depending on the colors I was going for. The three outtakes were done with my D50 and are outtakes from the “odd” challenge.
Btw, when I said I that this was a “test” shot for my D700, I didn’t mean to sound flippant.
I take a lot of time when experimenting and I’m always trying to improve my composition, lighting, etc. What I meant was, I did the testing during the challenge entry week, I wasn’t trying for anything for the challenge but found one which fit.

Have you considered a very basic (and very cheap and unreliable) point and shoot camera? :-)

Irene, Wow, another great splash shot. Have you ever considered doing a tutorial on your processes for these type shots? Maybe with some images of your setup, lighting techinques, flash settings, props, that kind of stuff.

Irene - At least we all have some measure of comfort knowing that you can't enter both open challenges each week....

Great shot - the bubble is perfect in its inperfections.

I don't know how you do it, you are definitely not rising from the depths. You're near the tops in water droplet macros. Purple Rain!

Great Shot!
Now why would you think your D700 wouldn't outperform your D50?!?! Should i sell my D700 and by an old D50 for 300$?

This looks beautiful. If this is not IreneM, you've created a great immitation. Wonderful clarity and colours. The one thing I would like to add is that the border looks a little too thick. With the ripples on the right, it looks good, but on the left it overpowers them. 9 for now
