Challenge: Immovable (Basic Editing)
Camera: Canon EOS-30D
Lens: Canon EF 16-35mm f/2.8L USM
Location: Reykjavík, Iceland
Date: Sep 5, 2008
Aperture: f7.1

Date Uploaded: Sep 5, 2008

The Image: Shot just after sunset near Reykjavík Iceland. I dont know the story of this boat or why it is there but its been there for a long time.

Processing: Lots of highlights/shadow tweaks to get out some details in the foreground. Blue curves and saturation adjustments to get contrast in the blue sky. Noise reduction and unsharp mask with various radius.

Post Challenge: I wish I had read the challenge description better. As pointed out in many of the comments the image does not have somebody trying to move an object.

You will have to stop sending this sort of entry in - or I just might have to move home to be up there.

I had a problem even understanding what is happening here - how on earth can you get such a contrast in colour and mood in one shot of a sky - it looks like two completely different skies, but eventually, I see the tiny suns on the left, and reckoned it must be the sun actually on the left, hidden behind clouds which allow the orange sunset type glow, while on the right, it is somehow reflected and filtered or a clearer passageway to a darker night sky, with no reflections from the filtered sunset light. Well, I know what I mean anyway.

To me, a simply amazing atmosphere shot - I would love to be there to capture this sort of sky - I never get anything like that where I live - it must be the thin clear air where you are which can allow this sort of image - very well captured, and I like the boat which adds scale and interest. Never mind the title, just keep sending these lovely shots in - thanks for submitting!

I am sure others have mentioned, but a DNMC as the topic specifically mentioned a person moving something. A shame they didn't just leave it as immovable with no description.

Ignoring that, you have a great picture here. I love the blue in the sky, and the orange in the boat, and the depiction of immovable. The dark hill to the right is a problem for me (slightly). Would have been better with a little more light on it prehaps.

Shame about the DNMC (minus marks), still giving a good mark for a good shot.

Pretty colors. Imagine this will be on the front page. Not sure what's immovable about something that happens to be lying still. The two are not the same.

Very well done. I especially like the colors and the message is very well carried by the wreck of the boat.

Great photo, but I don't think this is a photo of someone moving an immovable object.

Life is so unfair. Ok then to the rest of us for not taking this shot but at least we get to see the beauty afterwards thanks to you. Overall to me a winner on composition, colour balance and artistic appeal.

I like the photo overall, nice colors. I am voting based on DNMC though as there is nobody in the picture.

Take a photo of someone trying to move an immovable object.

Great color. However, it would be unfair to score the image against others with "someone trying."

Take a photo of someone trying to move an immovable object. I like the shot but it really misses the boat (no pun intended) by not having someone in the shot.

Very nice photo. I really like the colors and the mood of the photo. However how is this someone moving an immovable object?

Hmm. Uh oh! The tides aren't a person. You get a negative 5! Woops. Sorry. Left over angst from the forum discussion. ;) No this is actually a nice shot and I think it fits the theme. Honestly I think they should have just made the challenge "Immovable" and the description "N/A" and we'd be a lot better off. Now as far as the image itself. The colors are great! But there seems to be something off. I think the boat really isn't the subject as it should be and there is a lot of dark area that really doesn't do the image well on the right side. I see you probably had to keep most of it in to get that beautiful sky in though. A different angle when the shot was taken would have done you well, but I think the angle that would have been best would probably have put you in the water. Possibly a solution would be a tighter crop with the boat in the bottom left 3rd and the brightest point in the sky at the top right 3rd kind of balancing each other out...

Sorry for the brick of text. :)

Very nice work - good sky and very good contrast between light and dark sides. I like the highlights in the black in foreground. Some very good alertness in getting the atmospherics. I'm guessing Grafarvogur, Iceland.

I do not see this as meeting the challenge as the challenge stated to take a photo of SOMEONE trying to move an immovable object. Too bad too as this is a very nice image as far as technicals go. It is for this reason alone that I am giving it a 6. Had you included a person perhaps trying to pull the boat ashore by their own power alone I would have had no problem giving it a ten.

This is such a great image! The only reason I am deducting marks here are because of the challenge requirements:

"Take a photo of someone trying to move an immovable object."

I fail to see who is trying to move what in this scene. I assume it would the the waters trying to move the boat... but that isnt apparent here. The water is so calm.

I love the sky in this, the lighting is great! I can't quite put my finger on it but something is unbalanced in it - maybe it is that the boat isn't stronger than the foreground shoreline.

Absolutely beautiful photo. Colours are superb...unfortunately, I have to deduct a few point because I don't see "someone trying to move an immovable object".
