This little lady is a juvenile magpie. She has only been out of the nest about 6 weeks. She comes to the birdfeeder every afternoon with her parents and sister where they take turns at feeding. They don't seem to group feed and it's usually the babies that get the first chance on the feeder whilst mum and dad keep watch. Magpies are primarily carnivores but they seem to have taken a liking to one specific seed that is in the wild bird mix. It's a bright red and round seed about half the size of a small pea. Once these are gone they go back to foraging around the paddocks until I replace the seed.

I saw magpies for the first time a few of months ago in Montana. They are eye catching to watch when they fly. I couldn't get near enough to get a good shot of any of them.
I like the vignette you chose for this shot. It isolates the subject nicely without being distracting.

That's fascinating about how they feed, and good for you for noticing. I'm not sure about the vignette, perhaps a bit less or maybe a square crop. Just my opinion, of course.

All I could think of when I first saw this was Clara Peller shouting "Where's the Beef????"

We used to have a lot of magpies in our area, but the population was decimated by West Nile virus. They seem to be slowly making a comeback. I've never seen at feeders like this before. Beautiful capture.

Nice vignette on this! Draws the attention directly to the bird.

how fun to be able to observe this family everyday! I can't believe how big she is already! Would love to see the male's plumage

there are a lot of lines running throughout this image which seem to work very well at leading my eye throughout the frame; I like also how clearly I can see into the woods in the bg

I've never seen a Magpie; this is interesting. Evidently you don't have squirrels, raccoons, and deer there. We could never have an open feeder like that. The seed would be gone in about two minutes in my yard back in NY. I think the tall fence is interesting. I wonder what you are keeping out or in.

As far as the image is concerned, I think I would prefer a dark vignette over this light one. I find the light vignette a bit distracting. Maybe if you took it all the way to white I would like it better.

I did not realize they were so large- thanks for the info. I get a lot of bird information from Jane (stargazer) cuz I'm to lazy to look it up myself !
Did you make the feeder -it's a great one :)

Nice perspective of her/him which looks good size already. They must be fairly lg in size as adults..
Notice the high wire fence in the bg. Guessing your yard is fenced in..and nice forest land in the back..
