 The IMAGE: Woke up to a gorgeous sunrise in Koh Samui, trouble is, I couldn't get to the key! I lost 10 minutes of perfect magical light. My son had it in the end! So I rushed down to the beach, mounted the camera on the tripod, and for the purpose of this shot, this was the best one of the bunch.

I used a Nikon SB800 to fill in for the foreground.

EDIT: Only levels and colour balance, USM. Wish this was advanced editing ruleset!!!

PREDICTION: This is not what you might call the typical use for a fill in flash shot, so I would imagine t might get voted down. Hope not though...

DURING: I got a few comments wondering where the fill flash was used. I used it to fill the foreground and rocks. I shot this vertically and cropped it square. The flash became a side fill that gave detail to the rocks. I also had it fire at the end of the 1/3 second exposure to get the blur in the water first.

POST: OK result in the end...wish my exposure was better to compensate for the sky...

I like the pastel tones and colours in this and the rocks and pebbles anchor the shot both with their presence and their colour.

I agree 100% with the last line of your comment.
I just bought a grad ND filter for this kind of shots. Found a very inexpensive one in ebay to use it with the Cokin P system. Still a very nice oceanscape.

Beautiful. Maybe under exposing about 1 stop would have helped this.
I love Koh Samui. I have been there 7 times. Even proposed to my wife there, and had my honeymoon there. I haven't been back for 10 years though. :(

background sky got bit overexposed, maybe because of the increased exposure ..very nice composition though ..

Nice picture, shame there is so much cloud at the sunrise. Everytime I go to take sunset pics, there is always too much cloud at the sunset point, very irritating, lol

This is a nice shot, good combination of a longish exposure time and fill flash to get the effect of the waves rolling in. Good detail on the rock also, there's little in this image I can fault.

Just one thing I would like to see, the nature of the image makes me want to see more across the horizon, it could have been good if the image was opened out a little more to the left and right.
