I think if you had flashed the cactus once during the 30 second exposure or else painted it with a flashlight it would have lighted it up and emphasized it, making it more interesting. The thumbnail definitely looks all black, but on my monitors I can see the silhouette of the cactus (or aloe?). The Southern Cross showed up well.
bassbone, I was also wanting to the the Southern Cross for years (since the Crosby, Stills Nash song at least) but when I finally saw it a few years ago I was disappointed. What you see in this picture is pretty much it. No offense to those down under, but I think we have the lion's share of interesting constellations here in the Northern hemisphere, though you can see most of them, including Ursa Major from pretty far South. |
From about the same ara one can see the Magellanic clouds with the naked eye. A photo (my ones at least) do not do justice to the southern night sky. It is a lot more majestic than you will get from this photo.
I agree with the comments and think that this was generally a poor photo. I was out camping and has to do with my laptop out in the bundu. I took other shots of the Southern Cross rising over the sea. They were a bit overexposed, but in hindsight they were probably the ones I should have looked at for submission.
Well, my policy is take part and submit. That way I will learn. This was the first "star" photos I have ever taken and I have learnt a lot.
Thanks for all the comments and suggestions.

Needs more pop, contrast -- maybe a longer exposure. Can't relly see the foreground and it clearly needs something else to add interest. |

Not really getting any wow out of this. A longer exposure could help this. |

Thanks for adding "over cactus". It would have drove me nuts trying to figure out what was in the shadow. Cheers! |

You're going to get pasted score wise, since monitors vary so much, and on many this looks like just a black square. |
