It's Brown Pelican nesting season, and there's a spot on the La Jolla coast called Pelican Rock. Swarms of pelicans nest on the cliffs below La Jolla, and it becomes a photographer's paradise.

I had so many good shots from this shoot that I had no idea which to pick. All of the pelicans on the top of the cliff, within range of the photographers, are immature, and not in mating plumage, but they're fun to watch nonetheless.

post processing: levels, sharpen

By the way, the one on the left started it.

This is great! I love the seagull in the background, spying on the proceedings. Excellent capture. :)

Well, I haven't seen the others in your shoot -- but its hard to imagine one being better than this :) I love your title so much. And I love the little guy looking up at his arguing peers. Like, "I'm stayin' out of this one. . .but what're you gonna do about it!"

And the one who started it looks just so proud of himself, doesn't he? I love this photo!

Nice shot, I like how the one on the left is just sittin' out on this one.

very nice capture. I really like the expression from the seagul in the middle. Also, I like the way all three pelicans have different expression on their face.

Heh! Three teenage boys boasting over who had the high score on the latest video game, or claiming they talked to the hottest chick on the next rock over... very enjoyable!

This is a nice capture, love the little seagull. Looks like he's thinking it's time to leave.

This is such a great shot. I see the gull as arbiter or judge LOL

I would need a book on Pelican Body Language to figure this one out! The seagull looks so sheepish.

Great colours here - little bit of a problem with the strong sunlight, I guess (but don't lets complain about that, eh?). Excellent capture and documentation (as well).

wow, fantastic!

Pelican on the left:" Ah come on darling, see how he's looking at me- can't we keep him?"
Pelican on the right: " No, we already have 3 seagulls at home, and the neighbours are already complaining!"

lol

PAW - Great shot. I love the seagull taking it all in. I'm going to have to find that rock. Is it near Bird Rock? I didn't recognize it as yours, not being a hummingbird ;-). I think reducing the brightness slightly would improve it.

Pelican 1 "Oh great, here goes Ted and his fish story again."
Pelican 2 "It wasn't that big, I was there remember?"
Seagull "Someone got a fish up here?"
Pelican 3 "I swear, it was at least this wide!"

OUCH - sunny California - urban nature - a photographer's paradise?!? ...all I have is a drunk friend from new year's eve and a broken bridge in my park (when I can get to it)
Just kidding - this is a great find and I hope you take advantage while they are around.

I almost shotphotographed some turkeys crossing the road, but they hurried away into the woods as I skidded to a stop on the icy road ;) You are doing great!

What a cool shot. It looks as if the pelicans are having a heated discussion while the seagull stands back and observes it all.

Love the colors and action

They really DO look angry at each other! The guy on the left with his head down glaring at the one on the right who is just scolding the other two. And in the background, the innocent little seagull just looking up and taking it all in. Great contrasting colors and textures here too. Wonderful shot! :)
