I realize this is a bit of a stretch but since my wife and I don't have a pet I thought'd I'd try and be some what creative with my reasoning for getting this photo into the challenge...

RAW to JPG, levels, crop, sharpen, save for web

This is my first photo submission with my new 40D. I’ve been taking it out at lunch to work on exposure settings in various lighting conditions outside. To my amazement, I happen to look up in the tree to see this beautiful bald eagle. I find them to be absolutely gorgeous animals.

Whether it fits the submission or not, it's a fabulous capture of a gorgeous bird.

Quite the moment of good fortune. Enjoy it.

This is not really a portrait.
I think the subject is just a part of the overal image rather than dominating it.
Here is the wikipedia definition:
A portrait is a painting, photograph, sculpture, or other artistic representation of a person, in which the face and its expression is predominant. The intent is to display the likeness, personality, and even the mood of the person. For this reason, in photography a portrait is generally not a snapshot, but a composed image of a person in a still position. A portrait often shows a person looking directly at the painter or photographer, in order to most successfully engage the subject with the viewer.

I understand the sentiment, but 'Pet' implies a domestic animal or bird.

The tree is very distracting. If you shot large enough, you could crop most of it out, just leaving the face of the eagle.
