Challenge: Hidden Gem -- 1,000th Challenge! (Advanced Editing VII*)
Camera: Canon EOS-30D
Location: Lin Kou, Taipei County, Taiwan
Date: Apr 25, 2006
Aperture: f/2.5
ISO: 320
Shutter: 1/100
Galleries: Black and White, Children
Date Uploaded: Mar 7, 2009

Taken on my very first day shooting with my DSLR.

Image number 148.

I did my best to re-edit this. I have a few versions of it kicking around and the low contrast, slightly soft B&W is the one that pierces me the most. It has been up on my wall for about 3 years and I like it more every day.

Intentionally low contrast and slightly underexposed. I hope people see that.

Re-edits to bring it up to speed with noise reduction and other editing techniques that have seen improvement in the past 3 years. It is substantially almost identical to the print in my room. Editing was done with a strong view to being subtle.

Taken with a 50mm f/1.8 II that I no longer own. In the original, you can see the backfocus that caused me to move to the f/1.4. I compensated by softening the in-focus areas in the final version.

I have no idea why they are so sad. It was just their pose for the camera.

Originally shot in JPG.

This really is a hidden gem for me because it sits in a folder that I never actually got around to archiving!!! and it's on an old spare HD that I was going to reformat if I needed a bit of extra space since I thought that I had already sorted everything. Also, I don't think I have ever posted this online in this crop, yet it's also the only one from that first day that I ever printed in a large size - AND the only one that really takes me back and captures my own emotion of melancholy for the feeling for my early times here in Taiwan and the people that I met that were so very special, but that I will likely never meet again. Reviewing these shots almost brought a tear to my eye for real.

Post Challenge:
I knew that the score would be low. I was hoping for a low 6. I expected a 5.6.

Reviewing the comments was a bit frustrating to me.

Things like 'it's a bit soft' and 'it's too dark' make me wonder if people have ever experienced a moment of sadness.

Oh well. It was fun for the challenge. At least it's in the top 50% :)
