[Mar. 11th, 2009 11:34:34 AM]

From RAW through ACR to CS3

Multi-layered Topaz Adjust rendering, with some areas masked out and processed separately, noticeably the sky. Hue/sat, resize, adamus sharpening, save for web.

original image: ' . substr('//images.dpchallenge.com/images_portfolio/30000-34999/30861/120/772832.jpg', strrpos('//images.dpchallenge.com/images_portfolio/30000-34999/30861/120/772832.jpg', '/') + 1) . '

******

Notes during early voting: this is NOT and HDR image, but is a heavily "tone mapped" rendering of the original, which had a perfectly manageable tonal range on its own.

I am amused at the number of comments saying "not a fan of this sort of processing"; I'd wish, in the best of all possible worlds, that folks would just vote the image on its own terms, regardless of whether they like that particular subject or approach or not, but I know this ain't gonna happen.

The stage was set when my first vote received was a 2, sigh.... Hopefully the image will stay over 6.0, but I'm not holding my breath.

It's one of my most recent, BTW: it seems to best repesent the direction in which I'm traveling right now. I love the rich, detailed, *bleak* wintriness of it.

I think that what I like better about this shot is the snow, it adds more interest ...it appeals to me

I remember thinking this might be yours when I voted. The grasses intrigue me with the patterns they make - I wonder if they lie flat because of the weight of the snow that has rested on them, or because of flooding from the stream. A really pleasing composition.

Well, of course it's not surprising, nor did I say I was surprised. I just wish people would work harder at judging an image on its own terms, instead of reacting from an arbitrary position. I realize this isn't gonna happen, and I'm not even annoyed at anyone for *doing* it, but still...

For me there's not a lot of difference between dismissing this image because "I'm not a fan of HDR" and dismissing ShooterX's image because "I don't like cats." Seriously...

I just wish someone'd have looked at the ORIGINAL post-challenge, seen what I was working with, and discussed the two objectively. I still think this is a heck of a job, and not extreme at all. Certainly, it's MUCH closer to what I actually *saw* than the as-captured RAW is.

of course, if the "approach" is what makes them like/not like a photography, i want to know that as well. . . .

I like the breadth and depth that this shot feels

I really love topaz, I've been using it on everything lately. This is a beautiful, detailed image! And you at least made it over 6!

I'm liking the Topaz look and I like how the lines draw me in.

I do believe I was right in my earlier comment. Got a 7 from me though - I like ridiculously overprocessed images. ;-) (kidding, you know).

I can see why you like this--great depth and leading lines. The processing has enhanced that in the grass as well The snow gets a little weirded out by that processing though. I'd have stepped it back just a tad, but it's very painterly and impressionistic as is, which I like. (Not voting, just commenting, at least so far.)

The sky is such an interesting color contrast to the marsh. You chose the right light and day to make this gem of a photo.

Has a definite feel of HDR. I like it!

Really great angle and composition on this. Since my earlier novice comment about "alittle heavy" on the processing, I have researched HDR alittle. In doing so, realized your processing is truly reflective of that style. Your picture is beautifully composed and presented, which clearly shows someone behind the camera who possesses the photographic eye we'd all love to have. Just wanted to come back and tell you. From the humbled and somewhat embarassed novice :)

I really like this - the composition is nice, the scene is interesting, the colors and tones are great but... I'm not crazy about the PP - seems a little too much for this terrific shot. It's just a matter of taste, I know. I gave this a 7 but with more subtle PP would have voted it higher. :-)

03/15/2009 01:35:47 PM
Interesting post processing but it really makes the image rather busy. The water does help to lead through the image but can't hold its own against all that's going on in my opinion.

03/15/2009 12:01:47 PM
I am not a fan of HDR so what I say probably won't be what any other voters are thinking because I seem to be in the minority on this. It's overdone to me, you've taken a lovely scene and made it cartoonish and fake looking, sorry. That being said, the waves in the grass in the foreground are pretty cool.

the post processing does add another element to this image. did you try cropping to remove all the sky? down to the beginning of the stream. just a thought

I think you've gone too far with the HDR effect. But having said that, I like absolutely everything else about your photo ... the composition, the detail, the colors, the focus and find it a pleasing image.

The stream really draws an interesting line across the landscape. Nice tones, though the wide angle distorts the line of trees to the right.

Love the scene. Love the colors. Love the detail. I think the processing is giving to give you a fair amount of LOVE IT / HATE IT scores & comments. Overall I like it a lot. If anything, the border detracts from it for me.

I like the composition, but the processing stands out way too much for my personal taste. Also, the bars at top bottom, no matter how fashionable at this time, do not work well IMO. ~5
