Challenge: Habits (Basic Editing I)
Camera: Canon EOS-10D
Location: My Dining Room
Date: May 17, 2004
Aperture: f2.8
ISO: 100
Shutter: 1/60
Galleries: Macro
Date Uploaded: May 18, 2004

Used a old, small, military issue bible.

Shot in my dining room with as much lighting as I could get using an overhead light and the light of 1 500W halogen work light. Still not enough light. Very slight crop. Saturation +5. Thats it.

Lens Used: Canon 100 f2.8 Macro (Handheld)

OK, I don't get it. Man's been around for eons before Christianity, so it can't mean that reading the bible is man's oldest habit. The hilighted passage is about crucificition, so are you saying violence and hatred are man's oldest habits. I suppose an argument could be made for that, but it's a pretty bleak outlook.

well done

I'm in disagreement that man's oldest habit is reading the Bible since until the invention of the printing press, most folks didn't even own a Bible. But daily reading of Scripture is a habit (in the way that brushing one's teeth, making one's bed, etc becomes habitual). This is a rather mundane depiction of that habit, however.

I simply don't get it. What are we supposed to see?

The inconsistent focus is very distractig in this image. I like the angled composition.

This photo isn't very interesting to me. The lighting is flat- no highlights or shadows to add some range to the image. The large area out of focus hurts my eyes when trying to look at it- the brain wants to read the words but can't make them out.

What's man's oldest habit? Crucifixion? The title confuses a rather sharp picture.

This is a very subjective take on the challenge ... I'd rather see it being more specific than a random page. It think it would work better in B&W.

too shallow DOF imo..could have maybe found a passage refering to habits to tie it in and focused on the whole passage.. white bal. seems a little off too

There were definitely habits before reading. And there were probably even habits before considering a higher-power came along. But nice photo. I wish the contrast was higher and the white-balance more striking.

Man's oldest habit is probably chasing deer, sex for fun or clubbing little animals

The low contrast, and dim yellow lighting make this look like a bad habit. I would prefer to see this more brightly lit. More depth of field would help, as well.
It's a good idea, and a good composition.

I like how the depth of focus moves in a circular fashion
